How about ridiculing it and encouraging its diners to grab a dirty burger instead. That\u2019s the exact approach <\/strong><\/span><strong>fried<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><strong> chicken joint KFC took when promoting their latest menu item \u2013 The Dirty Louisiana.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In response to current food trends, which in January saw eight clean eating titles in Amazon\u2019s top ten cooking books, KFC dreamed up their own clean eating, social media maven to promote a spoof, cauliflower-based snack.<\/p>\n<p>It seemed to work, the fictional Figgy Poppleton-Rice scored tens-of-thousands of followers via her <a href=\"http:\/\/figgypoppletonrice.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><u>blog<\/u><\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/figgypop_rice\/\" target=\"_blank\"><u>social media accounts<\/u><\/a>\u00a0where she prompted culinary delights such as her diary free milkshake (essentially four dairy free milk alternatives served in a jam jar), a veggie hot dog (a carrot tucked into an aubergine) and tofu energy bars (a slice of tofu with two pine nuts on top).<\/p>\n<p>The campaign culminated with the \u201claunch\u201d of the Poppleton-Rice-endorsed KFC Clean Eating Burger (essentially a sliver of \u201cspiralised\u201d chicken breast, a tone of kale and some \u201cice cube relish\u201dserved between a halfed head of cauliflower) on Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>KFC left the campaign to simmer (or more likely, lightly steam) for five days before the truth was finally revealed. During this period the campaign received 4.8 million views, nearly 16,000 shares and 53,000 comments.<\/p>\n<p>Jack Foley, brand manager at KFC UK and Ireland, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prweek.com\/article\/1426266\/why-uk-health-food-blogger-cant-stop-talking-kfcs-new-burger\" target=\"_blank\"><u>told journalists<\/u><\/a>: \u201cOur whole positioning around this was challenging that joylessness of clean eating that we\u2019ve noticed through social listening and covered as a hot topic in the press.<\/p>\n<p>Foley continued: \u201cWe wanted to have five days where people were like, \u2018What is going on?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>KFC finally destroy the myth of the Clean Eating Burger by dropping a huge banner for The Dirty Louisiana on poor Poppleton-Rice\u2019s Facebook cookery demonstration.<\/p>\n<p>KFC followed up with a release that stated: \u201cWhile it [The Dirty Louisiana] might not actually have incredible superfood powers, it tastes loads better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>KFC have done a great job riding the zeitgeist while poking fun at current fads and themselves.\u00a0 Who can argue with that?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How does a fast food chain ride on the back of the current clean eating fad sweeping the UK?
