{"id":101103,"date":"2017-03-20T13:59:54","date_gmt":"2017-03-20T13:59:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/?p=101103"},"modified":"2017-03-20T13:59:54","modified_gmt":"2017-03-20T13:59:54","slug":"uk-government-and-big-brands-pull-ads-from-youtube","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/blog\/uk-government-and-big-brands-pull-ads-from-youtube\/","title":{"rendered":"UK government and big brands pull ads from YouTube"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The UK Government has join a number of big brands and pulled advertising from YouTube due to fears that taxpayers\u2019 money is helping fund extremist content.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to a report in The Times, advertising from the Home Office, the Royal Navy, the Royal Air Force, Transport For London and the BBC has appeared alongside video content from rape apologists, racists, anti-Semites and banned hate preachers.<\/p>\n<p>A government spokesperson told journalists: \u201cGoogle is responsible for ensuring that the high standards applied to government advertising are adhered to and that adverts do not appear alongside inappropriate content.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They continued: \u201cGoogle has been summoned for discussions at the Cabinet Office to explain how it will deliver the high quality of service that government demands on behalf of the taxpayer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chuka Umunna, a Labour member of the home affairs select committee, said: \u201cMultimillion-dollar social media companies with ample funds are simply not investing nearly enough in taking proactive action to stop extremist content from appearing and to stop it being monetised,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Umunna continued: \u201cProfit comes first for these people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to The Times, content producers receive approximately $7.60 per 1,000 advertising views. With many extremist videos receiving hundreds-of-thousands or even millions of views, it\u2019s easy to see how lucrative YouTube has become for broadcasters sharing extremist views.<\/p>\n<p>The Government has been joined by a number of big brands in their attempt to clean up YouTube.<\/p>\n<p>The Guardian has pulled all advertising from Google (who own YouTube) until they can be satisfied that their brand will not be promoted alongside extremist content.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for The Guardian said: \u201cIt is completely unacceptable that Google allows advertising for brands like\u00a0The Guardian\u00a0to appear next to extremist and hate-filled videos.<\/p>\n<p>They continued: \u201cWe have stopped all advertising through Google with immediate effect until we receive guarantees that this won\u2019t happen in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Channel 4 has also removed their advertising from the channel stating that they were not satisfied YouTube as \u201ca safe environment\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Retail brands Sainsbury\u2019s and Argos have also complained after their ads were linked to content promoting the nationalist organisation the Polish Defence League.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Google insisted that the organisation had \u201cstrict guidelines\u201d with regards to ad placement but the company \u201cdoesn\u2019t always get it right and sometimes ads appear where they should not.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The UK Government has join a number of big brands and pulled advertising from YouTube due to fears that taxpayers\u2019 money is helping fund extremist content.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":423,"featured_media":101105,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[3703,3729],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/101103"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/423"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=101103"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/101103\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":101110,"href":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/101103\/revisions\/101110"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/101105"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=101103"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=101103"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=101103"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
