The by-election was called after the death of <strong>Sir Gerald Kaufman<\/strong> on 26 February 2017. Kaufman had represented the seat since 1983, and had represented Manchester Ardwick from 1970 until the Ardwick seat was abolished in 1983. He was the Father of the House of Commons from 2015 until his death The election will be held on the <strong>4th May 2017<\/strong>. This will be on the same day as the Greater Manchester mayoral election and other nationwide local elections.
