{"id":102417,"date":"2017-04-24T13:42:51","date_gmt":"2017-04-24T13:42:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk?p=102417&#038;preview=true&#038;preview_id=102417"},"modified":"2017-04-24T13:56:31","modified_gmt":"2017-04-24T13:56:31","slug":"fake-news-facebook-doesnt-want-to-be-an-arbiter-of-truth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/blog\/fake-news-facebook-doesnt-want-to-be-an-arbiter-of-truth\/","title":{"rendered":"Fake News: Facebook Doesn\u2019t Want to be an Arbiter of Truth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><strong>Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook\u2019s Chief Operating Officer, has told journalists that the company takes the threat of fake news very seriously but the company does not want to become an arbiter of truth.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pressgazette.co.uk\/facebook-chief-says-decreasing-financial-incentives-for-false-news-is-focus-but-we-dont-want-to-be-arbiter-of-truth\/\" target=\"_blank\">Speaking to the BBC\u2019s Newsnight<\/a><u>,<\/u>\u00a0Sandberg said: \u201cWe are really a platform and we take our responsibilities on false news very seriously.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFalse news hurts everyone because it makes our community uninformed, it hurts our community, it hurts countries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd we know that people want to see accurate news on Facebook and that\u2019s what we want them to see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite this stand, Sandberg has suggested having an editorial voice as the arbiter of truth was not appropriate for the social network.<\/p>\n<p>Sandberg said: \u201cWe think everyone needs to do their part. Newsrooms have to do their part, media companies, classrooms and technology companies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re focused on decreasing the financial incentives for false news because a lot of times it is financially motivated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all have to do our part to make sure that people see accurate information and figuring out how we do that is something that we\u2019re going to have to see and will evolve.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut we know the goal, the goal is for people to see accurate information on Facebook and everywhere else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Facebook and Google have come under increased criticism for not only enabling pedlars of \u201cfake news\u201d to distribute misleading, unsubstantiated or completely false news via their platforms but also helping to finance and add credibility to fake news services via their advertising brokerage platforms.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s been suggested that while many \u201creal\u201d news outlets struggle to find a balance between an investment in serious journalism and the commercial opportunities available via digital and social platforms, fake news organisations (often <a href=\"https:\/\/www.channel4.com\/news\/fake-news-the-far-right-in-hungary\"><u>based in Eastern Europe<\/u><\/a>)\u00a0can target lucrative Western audiences with little upfront investment and no concerns about credibility.<\/p>\n<p>Should Facebook and Google take more responsibility for the proliferation of fake news?
