{"id":102915,"date":"2017-05-05T13:13:06","date_gmt":"2017-05-05T13:13:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/?p=102915"},"modified":"2017-05-05T13:13:06","modified_gmt":"2017-05-05T13:13:06","slug":"george-osborne-starts-first-day-at-evening-standard-with-a-promise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/blog\/george-osborne-starts-first-day-at-evening-standard-with-a-promise\/","title":{"rendered":"George Osborne starts first day at Evening Standard with a promise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><strong>George Osborne, the former Chancellor of the Exchequer, started his first full working day as the editor of the Evening Standard with a promise.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Osborne\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pressgazette.co.uk\/george-osborne-promises-straight-facts-and-informed-analysis-as-he-starts-new-job-as-standard-editor\/\" target=\"_blank\"><u>told journalists<\/u><\/a>\u00a0as he strolled into the office with a bundle of newspaper\u2019s under his arm: \u201cIt\u2019s very exciting to be starting in the new job.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a really important time in our country when people are going to want the straight facts, the informed analysis so they can make the really big decisions about this country\u2019s future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Evening Standard is going to provide that and it is going to entertain along the way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow I\u2019ve got to get in there \u2013 we\u2019ve got a paper to get off stone so I better get started.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, a number of media pundits and political opponents are highly sceptical about Osborne&#8217;s appointment based on a number of factors, including his complete lack of experience as a journalist and his deep-rooted political leanings.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2017\/may\/01\/george-osborne-evening-standard-stories-that-wont-make-headlines\" target=\"_blank\"><u>The Guardian<\/u><\/a>, Andy Slaughter, Labour MP for Hammersmith, said: \u201cThe main issues that we are campaigning on are directly the consequences of policies created by George Osborne, particularly the funding of public services. He has a direct interest in not correctly reporting the outcome of his own mistaken decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Imran Hussain, the director of policy with the Child Poverty Action Group, supports Slaughter\u2019s sentiment and said: \u201cPeople are finding it increasingly tough to pay rent and will cut back on other essentials to make ends meet, but there are limits to how much people can cut back on food and clothing. It is happening on George Osborne\u2019s doorstep. We would want him to cover that issue without fear or favour; we hope he will.
