{"id":104060,"date":"2017-06-15T13:54:44","date_gmt":"2017-06-15T13:54:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/?p=104060"},"modified":"2017-06-15T13:54:44","modified_gmt":"2017-06-15T13:54:44","slug":"vodafone-to-stop-ads-appearing-alongside-fake-news-and-hate-speech","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/blog\/vodafone-to-stop-ads-appearing-alongside-fake-news-and-hate-speech\/","title":{"rendered":"Vodafone to stop ads appearing alongside fake news and hate speech"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><strong>Vodafone is working on a strategy to ensure its advertising does not appear alongside fake news and hate speech.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The mobile telecoms giant, which reportedly spends \u00a3400 million of its annual \u00a3750 million advertising budget on digital media, is working with Google, Facebook and its advertising agencies to create a \u201cwhitelist\u201d of safe sites where it is happy to display its advertising.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2017\/jun\/06\/vodafone-ads-fake-news-hate-speech-google-facebook-advertising\" target=\"_blank\"><u>to journalists<\/u><\/a>, Matt Peacock, Vodafone\u2019s group director of corporate affairs said: \u201cIt is relatively easy to blacklist certain sites, such as those relating to porn and gambling, but it is difficult to exclude content that is \u2013 in editorial terms \u2013 at odds with an advertiser\u2019s own principles and beliefs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Peacock continued: \u201cWhen it comes to making a judgment about a site or channel focused on fake news or hate speech, what\u2019s needed is a human judgment, an editorial assessment. It\u2019s not possible to rely on algorithms alone. For that reason, we\u2019ve concluded that the best way to ensure brand safety is to use a whitelist approach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The whitelist, which will be reviewed regularly, will only feature sites \u201chighly unlikely to be focused on harmful content\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Vodafone\u2019s chief executive Vittorio Colao said: \u201cVodafone has a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion; we also greatly value the integrity of the democratic processes and institutions that are often the targets of purveyors of fake news.
