The additional spend is largely earmarked for the Children\u2019s online budget, \u2018reflecting the increasing share of children\u2019s media time spent online and the increasing competition for their attention\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Alice Webb, director, Children\u2019s at the BBC, said: \u2018Today\u2019s announcement means that whilst we\u2019ll continue to make exceptional, distinctive public service UK children\u2019s content across all of our platforms, we\u2019ll also be able to develop a more personal online service that meets the evolving needs of our audience.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The manifestation of that personal service hasn\u2019t been realised yet but traditional broadcasters are always looking at ways to tackle the behemoths Netflix and Amazon Video, who are relentlessly shaping on-demand services on a global scale.<\/p>\n<p>These streaming services are just the tip of the iceberg. In reality the digital competition is much broader \u2013 especially where children are concerned.<\/p>\n<p>The strongest competition likely lies on YouTube with videos such as \u2018Kinder Surprise Eggs Opening\u2019 proving ever more popular (a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/results?search_query=kinder+eggs+opening\">simple search<\/a>\u00a0produces over eight million such results). This is the type of content that\u2019s hard for a mainstream broadcaster to replicate in any sort of realistically competitive way.<\/p>\n<p>While it doesn\u2019t fall under the BBC\u2019s remit to inform or educate, bosses will be wary of the internet\u2019s endless supply of micro clips that can hold a child\u2019s attention. As the proliferation of tablets and video-playing devices suitable for little hands continues, so does the number of children capable of choosing their own content whenever they want.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The BBC has announced plans to overhaul its Children\u2019s programming to tackle competition from the internet.
