The big story of the week was undoubtedly the pay of the 96 top earners at the BBC (those who earn over \u00a3150,000). As it is the first time this information has been revealed, the opportunity to analyse results and be generally nosey has been too good for the media to give up. Revelations include a\u00a0gender pay gap<\/a> (with the seven top earners being men) and a\u00a0lack of ethnic diversity<\/a> (only 10 of the 96 are BAME, none earning above \u00a3299K.<\/p>\n Perspective on the earnings changes when commercial stars are considered \u2013 Ant and Dec reportedly<\/a>\u00a0made \u00a329.5m in the last year which is more than the entire earnings of the BBC\u2019s top 96.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n 2. Marshall McLuhan\u2019s 106th birthday<\/span><\/p>\n Today\u2019s Google Doodle celebrates the 106th birthday of Marshall McLuhan, the Canadian professor who \u2018predicted\u2019 the internet. McLuhan coined the expression \u2018the medium is the message\u2019 as well as the term \u2018global village\u2019. His concept that a global community would be brought together by technology was only really validated nine years after his death with the invention of the World Wide Web. <\/p>\n 3. ITV\u2019s first female chief executive<\/span><\/p>\n Carolyn McCall has been appointed<\/a> ITV\u2019s first female chief executive. The easyJet chief executive will succeed Adam Crozier on 8 January 2018. McCall has a strong background in the media, including her tenure as group chief executive of the Guardian Media Group.<\/p>\n Her appointment was announced the day after Jodie Whittaker was revealed as the new Doctor Who, the first female Doctor in the show\u2019s 54-year history. The BBC has confirmed she will be paid the same as Peter Capaldi.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n 4. Jane Austen \u2013 our greatest living author<\/span><\/p>\n The new \u00a310 note was launched this week.
