{"id":106211,"date":"2017-08-23T10:16:49","date_gmt":"2017-08-23T10:16:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/?p=106211"},"modified":"2017-08-23T10:16:49","modified_gmt":"2017-08-23T10:16:49","slug":"happy-birthday-hashtag","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/blog\/happy-birthday-hashtag\/","title":{"rendered":"Happy Birthday Hashtag"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>It started ten years ago as one man\u2019s suggestion to group messages and ideas with the # symbol and now over 125 million hashtags are used on Twitter every day.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The symbol is older than keyboards and telephone keypads, stretching back to when the English started writing lb, short for libra \u2013 the Latin for pound.<\/p>\n<p>Skip forward a few hundred years to 23 August 2007 when Chris Messina wrote the following tweet:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">how do you feel about using # (pound) for groups. As in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/barcamp?src=hash\">#barcamp<\/a> [msg]?<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 \u2317ChrisMessina (@chrismessina) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/chrismessina\/status\/223115412\">August 23, 2007<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The rest, as they say, is #History.<\/p>\n<p>Now celebrating its tenth birthday <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/hashtag10?src=tren&amp;data_id=tweet%3A900282567458508801\" target=\"_blank\">(#hashtag10<\/a>), the hashtag has become part of everyday lexicon and was added to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oed.com\/?authRejection=true&amp;url=%2Fview%2FEntry%2F389023#eid301493073\" target=\"_blank\">Oxford English Dictionary<\/a> in 2014:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>hashtag<\/strong> n. (on social media web sites and applications) a word or phrase preceded by a hash and used to identify messages relating to a specific topic; (also) the hash symbol itself, when used in this way.<\/p>\n<p>The BBC has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/newsbeat\/article\/41010284\/twitter-hashtags-are-10-years-old---here-are-some-of-the-most-popular\" target=\"_blank\">compiled a list<\/a> of some of the most popular hashtags, including #BlackLivesMatter, #EdBallsDay, #TheDress, #HeForShe and #PutYourBatsOut. While we think of these stand out moments and trends (#IceBucketChallenge anyone?) as being very popular on Twitter, it is the everyday hashtags that dominate the platform, the most popular being #FF, or Follow Friday, with hundreds of millions of tweets.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Evolution<br \/>\n<\/span>The little hatch mark (that\u2019s right, \u2018hash\u2019 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wordorigins.org\/index.php\/forums\/viewthread\/3808\/\" target=\"_blank\">came from the word<\/a> \u2018hatch\u2019), has evolved over time. Its original purpose, as suggested by Chris Messina, is still the dominant usage but hashtags have evolved written (and in some cases spoken) language to create clarity of meaning, especially with irony.
