{"id":106401,"date":"2017-08-30T08:33:39","date_gmt":"2017-08-30T08:33:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/?p=106401"},"modified":"2017-08-30T08:33:39","modified_gmt":"2017-08-30T08:33:39","slug":"amazon-vs-sky-let-the-games-begin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/blog\/amazon-vs-sky-let-the-games-begin\/","title":{"rendered":"AMAZON VS SKY: LET THE GAMES BEGIN"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Amazon has hinted that it\u2019s about to get serious about streaming live TV sports, threatening the dominance of traditional broadcasters like Sky.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Speaking at Edinburgh\u2019s International Television Festival, Roy Price, head of Amazon Studios <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/tv-and-radio\/2017\/aug\/25\/amazon-tv-hints-at-significant-expansion-into-sport-broadcasting\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a><\/u>: \u2018People love sports \u2013 it\u2019s big, it\u2019s engaging, it really motivates people, so I think that\u2019s a good opportunity. I think it\u2019s definitely an opportunity we\u2019ll explore.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Amazon recently announced that it had won the rights to broadcast tennis\u2019 ATP World Tour from 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the tennis, Price wouldn\u2019t be drawn on the type of sports coverage Amazon was interested in securing but city analysts have warned that increased competition, particularly from the likes of Amazon, Netflix, Google and Facebook, could force \u2018traditional\u2019 broadcasters like Sky to spend upwards of \u00a3600 million more per year to retain its dominance in areas like Premier League coverage.<\/p>\n<p>Sky currently shares Premier League football coverage with BT, paying \u00a34.2 billion over three years giving them access to the majority of the games.<\/p>\n<p>Highlighting previous television successes on Amazon, Price also suggested that the company may one day sell the rights to The Grand Tour, presented by the former Top Gear presenters Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May, to terrestrial television stations around the world.<\/p>\n<p>Price also spoke about the challenges facing streaming channels like Amazon and Netflix by stating: \u2018I think everybody wants to have one of the top 10 shows, one of the top five shows. That\u2019s really what matters most.
