The Irish cabinet will also meet this morning to discuss Brexit. The papers have varying assessments of May\u2019s likely success. The Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/edition\/news\/brexit-deal-90-there-says-senior-eu-official-sfjjcp62r\" target=\"_blank\">claims<\/a> that a deal is \u201985-90 percent there\u2019, the Financial Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/c2dde2f6-d850-11e7-a039-c64b1c09b482\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> the UK and the EU are on the \u2018brink\u2019 of a deal, but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2017\/12\/03\/brexit-timetable-jeopardy-theresa-may-fails-reach-deal-irish\/\" target=\"_blank\">according<\/a> to The Daily Telegraph the Government is \u2018highly pessimistic\u2019 about its chances of success and may might ask for an extension.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Increase in child and pensioner poverty<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThe Guardian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2017\/dec\/04\/uk-government-warned-over-sharp-rise-children-pensioner-poverty-study\" target=\"_blank\">reports<\/a> research by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, which found that almost 400,000 more children and 300,000 more pensioners in the UK were living in poverty than in 2012-13, in the first sustained increase in 20 years. The foundation blamed the increase on \u2018political choices, wage stagnation and economic uncertainty\u2019 and called for benefits to be unfreezed, training increased, and a more-ambitious house-building programme.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>NHS to rule out more \u2018poor-value\u2019 treatments<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThe Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/edition\/news\/nhs-ready-to-rule-out-more-poor-value-treatments-n9nhn7m3p\" target=\"_blank\">reports<\/a> that the NHS is to rule out more poor-value treatments, as it comes under pressure to find more savings. The chief executive of NHS Clinical Commissioners told the paper that \u2018There are a range of interventions that we shouldn\u2019t be doing because they don\u2019t work, [\u2026] We are now starting a piece of work to bring that all together and we hope there will be significant savings.\u2019<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Syrian aid programme suspended after allegations that it funded jihadis<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThe Guardian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2017\/dec\/04\/british-aid-scheme-suspended-amid-allegations-of-payments-to-syrian-jihadis\" target=\"_blank\">reports<\/a> that a foreign aid scheme funded by the Government has been suspended following allegations to be made in a BBC Panorama documentary this evening. The scheme, intended to fund a civilian police force through a programme run by Adam Smith International, allegedly saw money being channelled to jihadi groups.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Social Mobility Commission chair who resigned was due to be replaced<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThe Daily Mail <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-5142237\/Alan-Milburn-faced-axe-resigning.html\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> that Alan Milburn, who quit as chairman of the Social Mobility Commission because he had \u2018little hope\u2019 May could deliver change had already been told that May planned to replace him. A Whitehall source said \u2018Milburn was sacked and is now having a rant on his way out the door.\u2019<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Cabinet split over Damian Green\u2019s future<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThe Times has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/edition\/news\/colleagues-pile-on-pressure-in-damian-green-porn-row-n6cbc56zj\" target=\"_blank\">details<\/a> of a cabinet split over the future of Damian Green, the First Secretary of State. Apparently, May\u2019s team of staff are also split, with her chief of staff Gavin Barwell wanting Green to resign, whilst her director of communications, Robbie Gibb thinks he should stay.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Funding for \u2018mini nuclear power stations\u2019 to be announced<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThe Government is expected to announce up to \u00a3100m of funding for small nuclear power stations this Thursday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2017\/dec\/03\/mini-nuclear-power-stations-uk-government-funding\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> The Guardian. The competition to find the best value \u2018small modular reactor\u2019 has been delayed, leading to lobbying by firms.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Jeremy Hunt: social media sites should limit access by the young<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThe Daily Mail <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-5142167\/Jeremy-Hunt-asks-sites-limit-access-young-people.html\" target=\"_blank\">reports<\/a> comments made by Health Secretary that social media sites should limit access by vulnerable youngsters.
