The paper <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2017\/dec\/05\/mps-and-peers-criticise-tight-security-around-brexit-impact-reports\" target=\"_blank\">also says<\/a> that parliamentarians have criticised the tight security around access to the Brexit analyses, claiming that their content is \u2018little more\u2019 than what is already in the public domain.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><strong>Chancellor banned from using Ministry of Defence planes<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThe Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/edition\/news\/mod-bans-philip-hammond-from-using-its-planes-w8b6x96hn\" target=\"_blank\">reports<\/a> that the MoD has banned Chancellor Philip Hammond from using its planes, until the Treasury settles a bill of six figures, covering past flights. This comes as Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson prepares to fight the Treasury for up to \u00a32bn per annum in extra funding for the armed forces.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><strong>MI5 foils plot to assassinate Theresa May<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThe Daily Telegraph <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2017\/12\/05\/mi5-foils-islamist-terror-plot-kill-prime-minister\/\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> that MI5 has stopped a plot to assassinate Theresa May. Islamic extremists planned to use an improvised explosive device to blow up Downing Street\u2019s gates, before entering No 10. Cabinet members were told of the plot yesterday by MI5\u2019s head, and two men have been charged with terror offences.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><strong>Security services \u2018missed vital clues\u2019<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThe Daily Mail carries the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-5147059\/MI5-knew-Manchester-bomber-months-attack.html\" target=\"_blank\">news<\/a> that clues were missed in the lead up to the attacks in Manchester, London Bridge and Westminster. A review to be published today claims that an investigation into the Manchester bomber Salman Abedi would have been opened \u2018had its true significance been properly understood\u2019.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><strong>Gig economy reforms to be delayed<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2017\/dec\/06\/uk-government-delays-possible-reforms-gig-economy-self-employment\" target=\"_blank\">According<\/a> to The Guardian, reforms to the gig economy which would improve employment rights for 1.1m people are to be delayed until next year, amid concerns that they might be opposed by the right wing of the Conservative party. Matthew Taylor, who led the Government\u2019s review of the gig economy, said \u2018I would rather it was later and stronger rather than earlier and weaker.\u2019<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><strong>Highest reading standards for a generation<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThe Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/edition\/news\/best-reading-in-schools-for-a-generation-7ml2jxgh6\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> that improvements in reading standards by boys have put the UK joint eighth in the world in the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study results, up from tenth in 2011. Schools minister Nick Gibb attributed the success to the use of phonics, which he said had been prevented from use by \u2018dogmatic romanticism\u2019 before 2010. However, the paper points out that phonics programmes were announced by Ed Balls in 2008.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><strong>Ministers threaten to change the law to force Channel 4 to leave London<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThe Government is planning to change the law in order to force Channel 4 to relocate away from London, if it won\u2019t do so voluntarily, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/edition\/news\/channel-4-told-to-leave-london-voluntarily-or-be-forced-by-new-law-83wjkkzdx\" target=\"_blank\">according<\/a> to The Times. The broadcaster has claimed that moving would be \u2018highly damaging\u2019, but a Whitehall source told the paper that the firm\u2019s new management had until the new year to agree.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><strong>Tory peer planning to move into home owned by offshore trust<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThe Mirror <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/uk-news\/michelle-mone-planning-move-11million-11645666\" target=\"_blank\">reveals<\/a> that the Conservative peer Michelle Mone is planning to move into an \u00a311m home owned by an offshore trust linked to her boyfriend, Doug Barrowman.
