EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier said that he \u2018would not accept any backtracking\u2019 and rejected Davis\u2019s claim that a trade treaty could be signed the day after the UK leaves the EU. Meanwhile, The Times breaks the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/edition\/news\/judge-drags-jean-claude-juncker-into-scandal-over-wiretapping-zc88s7nxt\" target=\"_blank\">news<\/a> that European Commission President Jean-Claude Junker has been embroiled in a criminal investigation over \u2018tampered\u2019 evidence about wiretapping.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>May aims to see off Brexit rebellion by promising clarity<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThe Daily Telegraph <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2017\/12\/12\/theresa-may-seeks-head-tory-brexit-rebellion-promising-give\/\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> that the Government is planning to offer \u2018greater clarity\u2019, in a bid to see off a revolt by Tory backbenchers. Dominic Grieve said that there was a \u2018real possibility\u2019 that the Government could be defeated with an amendment requiring the final deal with the EU to be approved by a separate act of Parliament. Fellow backbencher Heidi Allen has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/opinion\/2017\/12\/13\/no-mutineers-parliament-must-have-binding-vote-final-brexit\/\" target=\"_blank\">written<\/a> in the paper supporting the amendment.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Anne-Marie Morris reinstated, whilst Damian Green may be cleared<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nAnne-Marie Morris, who had the Conservative whip suspended after a recording of her using a racist remark was release, has been reinstated, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/edition\/news\/tory-mp-anne-marie-morris-reinstated-after-racism-row-knkxqfqqf\" target=\"_blank\">reports<\/a> The Times. Morris apologised and said that she had \u2018learnt from this experience\u2019, but Labour\u2019s Jon Trickett described the decision as a \u2018disgrace\u2019. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2017\/dec\/12\/fears-damian-green-may-escape-sanction-for-alleged-inappropriate-behaviour\" target=\"_blank\">According<\/a> to The Guardian, friends of Kate Maltby, who accused Dami\u00e1n Green of inappropriate behaviour, fear that he may be cleared of wrongdoing because the alleged behaviour took place before he was a cabinet minister.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Investigative journalism under threat<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThe Daily Telegraph <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2017\/12\/12\/investigative-journalism-threat-plans-restrict-press-freedom\/\" target=\"_blank\">warns<\/a> that proposed amendments to the Data Protection Act in the House of Lords could restrict press freedom. The amendments would limit journalists\u2019 public interest exemption and effectively require newspapers to join an officially recognised press regulator. The Government opposes the amendments, but Labour plans to support some of them, meaning that they might pass.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Ruth Davidson refuses to rule out standing for Westminster<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nScottish Conservative Leader, Ruth Davidson, has refused to rule out standing for selection as an MP, The Sun <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/news\/5126475\/scottish-tory-boss-ruth-davidson-drops-biggest-hint-yet-shes-eyeing-main-party-leadership\/\" target=\"_blank\">reports<\/a>. However, she said that she would only consider it if she failed to be elected as First Minister of Scotland in 2021.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>May to use foreign aid cash to reduce plastic waste<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThe Daily Mail <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-5173401\/PM-pledges-use-foreign-aid-fight-war-plastic.html\" target=\"_blank\">reports<\/a> that Theresa May pledged to use cash from the UK\u2019s foreign aid budget to tackle plastic pollution at a climate change summit in Paris. The paper claims that the environment has been put at the heart of attempts to rebrand the Conservatives as \u2018the caring party\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Public inquiries are a waste of time and money<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nA new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/edition\/news\/public-inquiries-criticised-as-waste-of-time-and-640m-khvw9dmg9\" target=\"_blank\">report<\/a> by the Institute for Government will claim that public inquiries are a waste of time and money, The Times says. \u00a3639m has been spent on 68 inquiries since 1990, but many recommendations have not been implemented.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Tory MP\u2019s aide on trial for rape<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThe BBC <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-42323926\" target=\"_blank\">reports<\/a> on the trial for rape of Samuel Armstrong, who was chief of staff for Conservative MP Craig Mackinlay.
