The paper <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/edition\/news\/labour-law-chief-backed-lenient-term-for-taxi-rapist-john-worboys-tcv6lc9nw\" target=\"_blank\">reports<\/a> that the roles of Baroness Scotland of Asthal (then Attorney-General, now Commonwealth Secretary-General) and Sir Keir Starmer (then Director of Public Prosecutions, now Shadow Brexit Secretary) are being questioned. In the i paper, the Secret Barrister <a href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/opinion\/comment\/man-raped-hundreds-women-released-prison-9-years\/\" target=\"_blank\">explores<\/a> how the sentence was reached, pointing out that Warboys was only convicted of 19 offences.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>\u2018Latte levy\u2019 recommended<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThe House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee has recommended a 25p \u2018latte levy\u2019 on throwaway coffee cups, the Daily Mail <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-5237181\/MPs-call-25p-latte-levy-disposable-coffee-cups.html\" target=\"_blank\">reports<\/a>. The levy could raise \u00a3438m and lead to a 30% reduction in use of coffee cups. Government sources said that they were \u2018open\u2019 to the idea, with a Government review due to report at the end of the month.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Prime Minister apologies for operation cancellations<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThe Guardian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2018\/jan\/04\/theresa-may-changes-tack-to-apologise-for-postponed-operations\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> that Theresa May has given an \u2018unprecedented apology\u2019 to the tens of thousands of people affected by NHS England\u2019s decision to postpone non-urgent operations and outpatient clinics until the end of January. The Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/edition\/news\/tory-call-for-new-taxes-as-patients-face-a-e-delays-38ldbfr66\" target=\"_blank\">adds<\/a> that Tory MPs have called for new taxes to fund the NHS, and the Daily Mail <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/health\/article-5237257\/Jeremy-Corbyn-holiday-Mexico-making-NHS-criticism.html\" target=\"_blank\">reports<\/a> that Jeremy Corbyn has been criticising the Government whilst holidaying in Mexico.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Student migrants should be removed from figures, Tory rebels say<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThe Guardian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2018\/jan\/04\/tory-rebels-urge-may-remove-international-students-net-migration-figures\" target=\"_blank\">claims<\/a> that high-profile Tories have called on Theresa May to remove international students from immigration figures. Home Secretary Amber Rudd is said to fear that there are enough rebels to defeat the Government on the issue.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Defence review to be broken up<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/106e2284-f178-11e7-ac08-07c3086a2625\" target=\"_blank\">According<\/a> to the Financial Times, the Government is planning to break up its national security and defence review. It is looking at publishing the security elements of the review as soon as possible, but pushing back armed forces decisions to later in the year. A final decision has not yet been taken, and the Government refused to comment on \u2018speculation\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>US calls on the UK to change or axe food regulations to enable post-Brexit trade<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThe Financial Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/0d3d1978-f16c-11e7-b220-857e26d1aca4\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> that the US undersecretary of agriculture for trade and foreign agricultural affairs, Ted McKinney has called on the UK to remove or change \u2018some of the sanitary and phytosanitary burdens\u2019 in order to enable trade with the USA. The Sun <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/news\/5273167\/genetically-modified-animals-could-be-sold-in-uk-once-we-leave-the-eu-says-michael-gove\/\" target=\"_blank\">reports<\/a> that Michael Gove, the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Secretary, has said that genetically modified animals could be sold in the UK after Brexit.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Research reveals Tory dependence on group of rich male donors<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nResearch by Labour, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/politics\/revealed-how-third-tory-donations-11798246\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> by The Mirror, reveals that the Tories are dependent on a small group of rich donors. The 64 donors who attended \u2018Leader\u2019s Group\u2019 dinners hosted by Theresa May in the first half of last year, 62 of whom are men, were responsible for over a third of the reported donations to the Conservatives in 2017.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Corbyn accused on \u2018hypocrisy\u2019 over peers<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThe Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/edition\/news\/hypocrite-corbyn-reneges-on-his-end-of-the-peer-promise-2k6jdwp3p\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> that Jeremy Corbyn is being accused of hypocrisy as he expected to create three new Labour peers, despite earlier pledges not do so, which he has already broken by ennobling Shami Chakrabarti.
