Yesterday saw the Cabinet being reshuffled, and the reaction from the press is less than positive. The Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/edition\/news\/justine-greening-quits-in-shambolic-tory-cabinet-reshuffle-mtxx55902\" target=\"_blank\">calls<\/a> it \u2018shambolic\u2019, The Daily Telegraph says it was \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2018\/01\/08\/theresa-mays-cabinet-reshuffle-pm-expected-appoint-no-deal-brexit\/\" target=\"_blank\">chaotic<\/a>\u2019, whilst the Guardian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2018\/jan\/08\/theresa-mays-reshuffle-thrown-off-course-by-defiant-ministers\" target=\"_blank\">opines<\/a> that May was \u2018thrown off course.\u2019 As The Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/edition\/news\/justine-greening-quits-in-shambolic-tory-cabinet-reshuffle-mtxx55902\" target=\"_blank\">explains<\/a>, May\u2019s lack of authority was \u2018laid bare\u2019 when Jeremy Hunt resisted efforts to make him business secretary and Justine Greening left the Government rather than become welfare secretary, while the mistaken announcement of Chris Grayling as party chairman added to the chaos. The Sun <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/news\/5297540\/theresa-may-cabinet-shake-up-in-disarray\/\" target=\"_blank\">suggests<\/a> that at least a dozen MPs from the 2015 intake will be promoted today, while the Daily Mail <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-5248641\/No-Prime-Minister-Theresa-sacks-Justine-Greening.html\" target=\"_blank\">expects<\/a> \u2018significant numbers of female and ethnic minority MPs\u2019 to join the Government.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Toby Young quits the Office for Students<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nToby Young, the controversial appointee to the board of the Office for Students, resigned from his post this morning. <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.spectator.co.uk\/2018\/01\/toby\/\" target=\"_blank\">Writing<\/a> in The Spectator, Young said that he appointment had \u2018become a distraction\u2019, adding that \u2018some of the things I said before I got involved in education, when I was a journalistic provocateur, were either ill-judged or just plain wrong \u2013 and I unreservedly apologise.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Davis consults lawyers over EU no-deal plans<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nAccording to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/7306b972-f49a-11e7-88f7-5465a6ce1a00\" target=\"_blank\">report<\/a>\u00a0in the Financial Times based on a letter from David Davis to the Prime Minister seen by the paper, Davis has consulted lawyers over the EU\u2019s preparations for a no deal Brexit, claiming that the EU is harming British business and breaching the UK\u2019s rights as a member state.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>No major outbreak of \u2018Australian flu\u2019 \u2013 just NHS underfunding, says virologist<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThe Guardian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2018\/jan\/08\/nhss-real-problem-is-underfunding-not-australian-flu-says-virologist\" target=\"_blank\">reports<\/a> that John Oxford, emeritus professor of virology at the University of London, has said that the NHS\u2019s problems are not being caused by an outbreak of \u2018Australian flu\u2019\u00a0but that \u2018there is a lack of investment, there are not enough doctors or nurses, and politicians are trying to blame the situation on influenza.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Health minister: Seats were available at hospital<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThe Mirror <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/politics\/tory-health-minister-claims-seats-11820603\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> that health minister Philip Dunne provoked anger when he answered questions about patients sleeping on hospital floors by saying that \u2018There are seats available in most hospitals when beds are not available.\u2019 Justin Madders, Labour\u2019s shadow health minister, described this as \u2018an appalling and ignorant remark\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Juncker: Brexit will go ahead<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThe Sun <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/news\/5297274\/eu-chief-jean-claude-juncker-backs-brexit\/\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> that Jean-Claude Juncker, European Commission president, told a conference, \u2018Don\u2019t believe those who say that it\u2019s not going to happen and that people have realised their error in the UK.\u2019 Labour MP Ben Bradshaw accused Juncker of being out of touch.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>UK to mitigate VAT damage<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThe Financial Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/a1598c8c-f47c-11e7-88f7-5465a6ce1a00\" target=\"_blank\">reports<\/a> that the UK is to \u2018mitigate\u2019 potential damage to 130,000 companies which face having to pay VAT upfront on goods imported from the UK post-Brexit. The Treasury said it would \u2018look at options to mitigate any cash flow impacts\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Corbyn: UK cannot remain in single market<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nJeremy Corbyn has said that the UK cannot remain in the single market after Brexit, disappointing pro-EU MPs, The Guardian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2018\/jan\/08\/jeremy-corbyn-eu-single-market-after-brexit\" target=\"_blank\">reveals<\/a>.
