However, according to Sutton Trust analysis, the Cabinet is more privileged than before. The Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/edition\/news\/white-men-booted-out-in-may-s-push-for-women-and-minorities-zpdc6t2x2\" target=\"_blank\">quotes<\/a> Theresa May as saying that the Government \u2018looks more like the country it serves\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Reshuffle: no no-deal minister leaves Brexiteers \u2018dumbfounded\u2019<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThe Daily Telegraph <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2018\/01\/09\/brexit-mps-left-dumbfounded-theresa-may-drops-plans-appoint\/\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> that Brexiteers have been left \u2018dumbfounded\u2019 after the Government abandoned plans for a no-deal minister to attend Cabinet, despite having promised them several months ago that this would happen. A Number 10 source told that paper that Brexit ministers \u2018will be invited to come where relevant\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>New environment strategy will extend plastic bag charge<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThe Daily Mail <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-5252737\/Theresa-extends-5p-plastic-bag-charges-small-shops.html\" target=\"_blank\">reports<\/a> that that the English 5p plastic bag charge will be extended to cover all shops (retailers with under 250 employees are currently exempt). A new 25-year environment strategy is to be unveiled tomorrow, with a deposit scheme for plastic bottles and new taxes on throwaway plastics apparently both under consideration.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Germany opposes bespoke Brexit trade deal as ministers visit<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThe Daily Telegraph <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2018\/01\/09\/german-opposition-risks-derailing-uk-hopes-bespoke-brexit-trade\/\" target=\"_blank\">claims<\/a> that German opposition could prevent a bespoke Brexit trade deal. Angela Merkel is opposed to the British proposal for \u2018managed divergence\u2019 from the EU. The news emerges as Philip Hammond and David Davis visit the country on what the paper calls a \u2018joint charm offensive\u2019. The paper also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/politics\/2018\/01\/10\/brexiteers-give-michel-barnier-hamper-english-wine-cheddar-show\/\" target=\"_blank\">reports<\/a> that Brexit supporters, led by Steven Woolfe MEP, are to meet Michel Barnier today, presenting him with a hamper of English produce, which would \u2018help illustrate our rich cultural and commercial offering\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>EU warns UK companies of the consequences of a no-deal Brexit<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThe Financial Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/3b60d294-f55f-11e7-8715-e94187b3017e\" target=\"_blank\">carries<\/a> details of legal notices issued by the European Union to around 15 regulated industries in November and December, calling on UK companies to be ready for the UK to become a third country on 29\/03\/2019, with no right to operate in the single market. The memos warn of lapsing operating licences and the need to create EU entities. The documents have caused complaints from Brexit secretary David Davis.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Labour to commit to staying in EU customs union<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/edition\/news\/labour-will-have-plan-to-stay-in-customs-union-by-spring-w2bmx5g78\" target=\"_blank\">According<\/a> to The Times, Labour is to commit to staying in a modified version of the customs union by the spring. Whilst the policy is not yet confirmed, and still faces obstacles, sources have told the paper that such a move is likely. Labour would ask the EU to give the UK a seat when negotiating future trade agreements.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Government\u2019s management of UK\u2019s largest rail franchise criticised<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThe National Audit Office has \u2018severely criticised\u2019 the Government\u2019s management of the Thameslink, Southern and Great Northern franchise, the Guardian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2018\/jan\/10\/transport-secretary-should-be-accountable-for-rail-network-delays\" target=\"_blank\">reports<\/a>. It found that Department for Transport decisions had \u2018negatively impacted on passengers\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Prime Minister will survive Brexit vote, says John Curtice<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThe Guardian has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2018\/jan\/09\/pm-likely-to-survive-final-commons-brexit-vote-says-john-curtice\" target=\"_blank\">details<\/a> of new claims made by elections expert John Curtice. He has said that Theresa May will survive the final Commons vote on Brexit, and that there is no evidence that enough leave voters now want to remain in the EU to force the prime minister to reverse Brexit, although polling carried out by NatCen has found that leave voters increasingly think that the Government is mishandling the negoticreations.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Want more political insight?
