Johnson faces backlash at Cabinet meeting<\/strong><\/span>
\nThe Times says<\/a> that Boris Johnson received a \u2018brutal rebuff\u2019 in yesterday\u2019s Cabinet meeting, but that this has not deterred him from laying out his vision of a \u2018liberal case\u2019 for Brexit next month. The paper adds<\/a> that at least eight cabinet ministers criticised Johnson yesterday, in an operation apparently \u2018authorised and led by the prime minister\u2019. The meeting concluded with Theresa May criticising those who leaked cabinet discussions.<\/p>\n

Allegations about charity dinner lead to calls for changes to the law<\/strong><\/span>
\nAn\u00a0investigation<\/a> by the Financial Times into the Presidents Club Charity Dinner, at which, the paper says, \u2018many hostesses \u2014 some of them students earning extra cash \u2014 were groped, sexually harassed and propositioned\u2019, has resulted in calls for changes to the law. The Guardian says<\/a> that Maria Miller, Chair of the Women and Equalities Committee suggested that \u2018perhaps it\u2019s time the government gives the Equality Act some real teeth?<\/p>\n

New defence review announced<\/strong><\/span>
\nAs The Daily Telegraph reports<\/a>, a new defence review has been announced, giving Gavin Williamson another five months to make the case for increased military funding. The review will be controlled by the Ministry of Defence, having been spun-off from Sir Mark Sedwill\u2019s cross-Whitehall security capability review, which had drawn up a programme of cuts.<\/p>\n

UK opposing new EU recycling targets<\/strong><\/span>
\nIn an exclusive<\/a>, The Guardian claims that confidential documents show that the Government is opposing strong recycling targets across the EU, despite recently pledging to develop \u2018ambitious new future targets and milestones\u2019. The UK Government is opposing a target to recycle 65% of urban waste by 2035, according to a record obtained by Greenpeace.<\/p>\n

New unit to combat \u2018fake news\u2019 will be created<\/strong><\/span>
\nThe UK is to create a new unit to counter \u2018fake news\u2019, the BBC reports<\/a>. According to a spokesperson for the Prime Minister, the \u2018dedicated national security communications unit\u2019 would be responsible for \u2018combating disinformation by state actors and others\u2019. The creation of the unit was agreed at a meeting of the National Security Council.<\/p>\n

Channel 4 to air allegations about three former ministers<\/strong><\/span>
\nA controversial episode of Channel 4\u2019s Dispatches, which alleges that three former Conservative ministers, Andrew Lansley, Andrew Mitchell and Peter Lilley, were willing to sell their services to a fake Chinese business will be shown next week, following a review by senior executives at the broadcaster, The Guardian says<\/a>. The three men deny wrongdoing.<\/p>\n

Government urged to introduce personalised road charging<\/strong><\/span>
\nThe BBC says<\/a> that a new report by the Association for Consultancy and Engineering (ACE) suggests that the Government should charge drivers for using the road network, based on their individual circumstances, including the type of road, time of day, congestion levels, and their personal financial situation.<\/p>\n

Labour\u2019s National Executive Committee sides with \u2018hard left\u2019 in Haringey dispute<\/strong><\/span>
\nThe National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Labour Party intervened in a dispute surrounding the Haringey Development Vehicle, a housing scheme run by the council in partnership with a private company, The Times reports<\/a>. The scheme, backed by the council\u2019s leadership, has been opposed by left-wing councillors, Momentum, and trade unions, as well as local Labour MPs, whose side the NEC has now taken.<\/p>\n
