Brexit analysis causes continued controversy
\n<\/strong><\/span>Brexit minister Steve Baker has claimed that Government economic forecasts are \u2018always wrong\u2019 and that the leaked Brexit forecast \u2018is not yet anywhere near being approved by ministers\u2019, according<\/a> to The Daily Telegraph<\/em>. A \u2018Cabinet source\u2019 told the paper that it was \u2018Project Fear Mark II\u2019. The Guardian<\/em> suggests<\/a> that Baker\u2019s claim has \u2018triggered a furious backlash\u2019 and says that Labour is to try to force the Government to publish the analysis using the same procedure previously deployed to force the publication of the Government\u2019s sectoral reports. Theresa May has told<\/a> the Financial Times<\/em> that economic assessments will be given to Parliament after the final deal has been agreed, but ahead of the vote on it,<\/span>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Theresa May: \u2018I\u2019m not a quitter\u2019
\n<\/strong><\/span>The Times<\/em> reports<\/a> that Theresa May has told reporters that \u2018I\u2019m not a quitter, and there is a long-term job to be done.\u2019 She refused to say if she would fight on in the event of a vote of confidence. May insisted that she had a plan to get \u2018the best Brexit deal\u2019 and that \u2018we need to ensure that we do speak about the achievements that we\u2019ve seen\u2019.<\/span>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Theresa May: China should play by rules
\n<\/strong><\/span>Theresa May has written<\/a> an opinion piece for the Financial Times<\/em> ahead of her trip to China, in which she argues for \u2018deepening co-operation\u2019 but warns that the two countries \u2018will not always see eye-to-eye\u2019, raising issues such as steel overcapacity, intellectual property, and trade rules. The paper describes<\/a> this as a \u2018blunt warning\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

Housing developers to lose right to build
\n<\/strong><\/span>Housing developers should lose planning permission on unused land, if they fail to hit construction targets, a review into land-banking is expected to conclude in the spring, according<\/a> to The Times<\/em>. The paper has interviewed Sajid Javid, who said \u2018We are on the side of people who want more homes.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

Inheritance tax gifting limit under review
\n<\/strong><\/span>Chancellor Philip Hammond has ordered a review into inheritance tax, The Daily Telegraph<\/em> says<\/a>. The review, to be carried out by the Office for Tax Simplification, could lead to an increase in the tax-free gifting limit, which has been frozen at \u00a33000 since 1981. The paper says that the move would \u2018help younger generations onto the property ladder\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

UK should add folic acid to flour, study says
\n<\/strong><\/span>The BBC reports<\/a> on a new study in Public Health News, which suggests that adding folic acid to flour would prevent spina bifida in unborn babies and not harm the public. Ministers in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have already backed the move.<\/span><\/p>\n

Parliament could be \u2018at risk\u2019, Historic England warns
\n<\/strong><\/span>The Guardian<\/em> has seen<\/a> a Historic England briefing note, which warns that the Palace of Westminster could be placed on the \u2018at risk\u2019 register of historic sites. MPs have a free vote tonight on whether or not to delay making a decision on repairs until the end of parliament, or to set up a delivery authority to draw up options to be voted on in 18 months\u2019 time.<\/span>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

UK hits skilled immigration cap
\n<\/strong><\/span>The Financial Times<\/em> reports<\/a> that the UK has hit the cap for skilled non-EU migrants for two months in a row, attributing this to companies being \u2018forced to look further afield to make up for falling numbers of European immigrants.\u2019 The NHS is amongst those being forced to turn away potential workers, whilst the Institute for Directors described it as a \u2018particularly big concern\u2019 for businesses.<\/span><\/p>\n
