{"id":112178,"date":"2018-02-02T14:25:15","date_gmt":"2018-02-02T14:25:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/?p=112178"},"modified":"2018-02-02T14:25:15","modified_gmt":"2018-02-02T14:25:15","slug":"official-unit-to-tackle-fake-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/blog\/official-unit-to-tackle-fake-news\/","title":{"rendered":"Official unit to tackle fake news"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10px;\">Not the new security unit, because you can&#8217;t shoot fake news<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Fake news and disinformation is to be tackled by a new security unit, an attempt to curb the nefarious influences of other states.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Theresa May\u2019s spokesman <a href=\"https:\/\/uk.reuters.com\/article\/uk-britain-politics-fakenews\/britain-to-set-up-unit-to-tackle-fake-news-mays-spokesman-idUKKBN1FC29C\" target=\"_blank\">told reporters<\/a>: \u2018We are living in an era of fake news and competing narratives. The government will respond with more and better use of national security communications to tackle these interconnected complex challenges.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We will build on existing capabilities by creating a dedicated national security communications unit. This will be tasked with combating disinformation by state actors and others. It will more systematically deter our adversaries and help us deliver on national security priorities.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Theresa May has previously accused Russia of meddling in elections and undermining western institutions. The US is particularly vocal about the interference, or lack thereof, of Russia in its democracy, with a major investigation ongoing. Russia, for its part, denies any wrongdoing.<\/p>\n<p>The power and purpose of \u2018fake news\u2019 is still being investigated by the government, with the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee next meeting on 8 February.
