Fox to attack customs union in speech today
\n<\/strong><\/span>International Trade Secretary Liam Fox is to argue in a speech today that a customs union between the UK and the EU after Brexit would be a \u2018complete sell out\u2019, the BBC reports<\/a>. He will argue that the UK must have the freedom to exploit the \u2018opportunities of the future\u2019. The Guardian<\/em> reports<\/a> that in a speech this evening, Sir Martin Donnelly, the former Permanent Secretary of the Department for International Trade, will warn that leaving the single market will cause \u2018significant damage\u2019. The Financial Times<\/em> adds<\/a> that pro-European Conservative MPs are to join forces with Labour in a vote on the customs union.<\/p>\n

Toby Young appointment process criticised
\n<\/strong><\/span>An investigation by the Commissioner for Public Appointments into the appointment of Toby Young to the board of the Office for Students has criticised the regulator and the Department for Education. The Guardian<\/em> says<\/a> that the report found that the process \u2018was flawed and rife with political interference\u2019.<\/p>\n

Top counterterrorism officer calls for children to be removed from extremists
\n<\/strong><\/span>The Times<\/em> reports<\/a> that Mark Rowley, assistant commissioner for special operations at Scotland Yard, has called for courts to remove children from extremist families. He said that exposing children to extremism was \u2018equally wicked\u2019 as exposing them to sexual abuse. In his speech, Rowley also said that far-right extremism was flourishing.<\/p>\n

The paper expects Theresa May to reject this proposal outright. Meanwhile, The Daily Telegraph<\/em> says<\/a> that France and Germany have blocked British plans to continue \u2018fudging\u2019 the Irish border issue, in what the paper calls an \u2018outrageous attempt to turn Northern Ireland into EU province.’<\/p>\n

\n<\/strong><\/span>Nicola Sturgeon has rejected the Government\u2019s latest proposals for devolution after Brexit, the BBC reports<\/a>. She said it is \u2018very likely\u2019 the Scottish Parliament will not give its consent to the EU Withdrawal Bill and rejected the idea that common systems of regulation could be imposed by Westminster without agreement.<\/p>\n

Gove to announce \u00a3150m cut in funding for wealthy landowners
\n<\/strong><\/span>The Financial Times<\/em> reports<\/a> that Michael Gove is to announce that \u00a3150m could be saved by cutting support for wealthy landowners, which could instead be used to help farmers focus on \u2018environmental enhancement and other public goods\u2019. The Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Secretary is to launch a consultation on an \u2018agricultural transition\u2019 period today.<\/p>\n

Train companies \u2018pocketing\u2019 millions
\n<\/strong><\/span>According<\/a> to The Daily Telegraph<\/em>, train companies are accused of benefiting from transport chaos by \u2018pocketing millions of pounds in compensation\u2019 when services are delayed or cancelled. The paper says that there is \u2018mounting anger\u2019 from Conservative MPs and campaigners over automatic compensation payments to rail firms from Network Rail.<\/p>\n
