David Davis in \u2018open rebellion\u2019 against Prime Minister<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/strong>The Daily Telegraph<\/span><\/em> claims<\/a> that Brexit Secretary David Davis is in \u2018open rebellion\u2019 against the Prime Minister and is refusing to front her plans for a customs backstop in order to avoid a hard border in Northern Ireland. While Downing Street has insisted that this will be \u2018time-limited\u2019, no end date has been included in details of the plan sent to the EU. The Times<\/span><\/em> claims<\/a> that Eurosceptic cabinet ministers are accusing Theresa May of deception, with remain-supporting ministers being shown the plans days before they were given them.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hunt confirms \u2018significant increase\u2019 to NHS budget<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/strong>Speaking<\/a> to The Guardian<\/span><\/em>, Health and Social Care Secretary Jeremy Hunt has revealed that Theresa May will announce a \u2018significant increase\u2019 to the NHS\u2019s budget when it celebrates its 70th<\/span> birthday in July. He also admitted that he is unlikely to meet his target of 5,000 more GPs in England by 2020, that \u2018patient safety in the NHS is still deeply flawed\u2019 and that Brexit had contributed towards NHS staff shortages.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Regulator warns universities that he\u2019ll cut tuition fees if diversity doesn\u2019t improve<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/strong>Writing<\/a> for The Daily Telegraph<\/span><\/em>, Sir Michael Barber, chair of the Office for Students, has warned that universities which don\u2019t improve diversity will see their tuition fees cut by a third. However, Professor Graham Virgo, vice-chancellor of the University of Cambridge, has instead that his institution will not give black and minority ethnic applicants \u2018special treatment\u2019, despite criticism from Universities Minister Sam Gyimah.<\/span><\/p>\n

MPs call for more women to give evidence to select committees<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/strong>The BBC says<\/a> that the House of Commons Liaison Committee has called for more women to give evidence to select committees, after it found that just 33% of witnesses in the last year were female. A target of reaching 40% female \u2018discretionary witnesses\u2019 (i.e. not ministers or senior officials) has been set for the end of this parliament.<\/span><\/p>\n

Javid promises \u2018fairer, more compassionate\u2019 immigration regime<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/strong>The Guardian<\/span><\/em> reports<\/a> that Home Secretary Sajid Javid told Parliament\u2019s Joint Human Rights Committee that he wants a \u2018fairer, more compassionate\u2019 immigration system. He admitted that the treatment of those affected by the Windrush scandal was not \u2018personal enough and not sympathetic enough\u2019 and that things had gone \u2018profoundly wrong\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gove attacks \u2018crony capitalists\u2019<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/strong>The Daily Mail<\/span><\/em> says<\/a> that Michael Gove, Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Secretary, has called for a crackdown on \u2018crony capitalists\u2019 who have \u2018rigged the system\u2019. He called for the tax system to be changed to encourage investment and for bosses\u2019 bonuses to be curbed. He also criticised quantitative easing, which he claimed had made the wealthy wealthier.<\/span><\/p>\n

1.5m Britons living in destitution<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/strong>The Daily Mirror<\/span><\/em> carries details<\/a> of a report by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation\u00a0that reveals that over 1.5m British people are living in destitution. The charity has warned that social security policies are leading to destitution \u2018by design\u2019 and has called for changes to the system, including to the use of Universal Credit sanctions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Archbishop of Canterbury calls for higher taxes<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/strong>According<\/a> to The Daily Telegraph<\/span><\/em>, Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury, has called on the Government to find the \u2018courage\u2019 to increase taxes to fund public services, including the NHS. He also called on the Government to increase borrowing, saying that interest rates showed that there was \u2018little reason to be so afraid\u2019 of doing so.<\/span><\/p>\n
