The media giant will become chairman and editor in chief of Associated Newspapers (which changed its name to DMG Media), but this move still marks the end of an era in British news.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s difficult to know where to begin when talking about Dacre, his success as an editor is unquestionable but his role in society has often been contentious and many are celebrating the news of his departure.<\/p>\n<p>Dacre used <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MediaGuido\/status\/1004464993897676800\" target=\"_blank\">his announcement<\/a> to staff to talk about the success of the Mail under his editorship, the paper\u2019s victories\u00a0&#8211; from the famous Stephen Lawrence <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/blog\/dacres-murderers-headline-due-to-personal-relationship\/\" target=\"_blank\">front page<\/a> to the recent anti-plastics campaign &#8211; and the whole team\u2019s effort in the \u2018battle for freedom of expression against those who seek to impose statutory regulation of the press\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Lord Rothermere, who owns the publisher but has always given Dacre editorial freedom, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MediaGuido\/status\/1004464993897676800\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a>, \u2018Paul is, quite simply, the greatest Fleet Street Editor of his generation\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The BBC\u2019s media editor, Amol Rajan, who seemingly <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/amolrajanBBC\/status\/1004422811761496065\" target=\"_blank\">broke the story<\/a> last night, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/entertainment-arts-44392661\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a>, \u2018Paul Dacre was the last of his kind\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>On Twitter the reaction was more mixed.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-cards=\"hidden\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Paul Dacre is stepping down as Daily Mail editor. Chorley wrote: \u2018Theresa May reads The Times because she likes the Sudoku. She reads the Daily Mail because she likes to know what Britain thinks. Well, her idea of Britain. And really it&#8217;s about what Paul Dacre, her loudest cheerleader, thinks.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Chorley also quotes an unnamed government source who text him saying \u2018Bad news for Theresa. Dacre&#8217;s the last person in the country who thought she was any good\u2019. Ouch.<\/p>\n<p>As for Dacre\u2019s replacement, there are many contenders being touted by the press, from The Sun\u2019s Tony Gallagher and the Telegraph\u2019s Chris Evans to the Mail on Sunday\u2019s Georgie Greig:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Please sign my Change dot org petition: \u201cInstate Geordie Greig as Daily Mail editor to piss off Paul Dacre\u201d. Before Paul Dacre became editor of the Mail, he had a brief stint editing the Evening Standard. Someone else who is currently a short period into his editorship of the Evening Standard is George Osborne.
