GCHQ director intervenes in row over post-Brexit secuity<\/strong><\/span>
\nThe Times<\/em> carries details<\/a> of what it calls an \u2018unprecedented intervention\u2019 by the director of GCHQ, Jeremy Fleming. He revealed that the UK had supplied information which had led to terrorist plots in four different European countries being prevented in the last year, and argued that the UK and Europe had benefited \u2018from our work together on our collective security\u2019. The paper suggests that this intervention was deliberately timed to support the UK\u2019s attempts to secure continued participation in EU security policies.<\/p>\n

M<\/strong>Ps prepare to vote again on a meaningful vote on the Brexit deal<\/strong><\/span>
\nThe BBC reports<\/a> that MPs will vote again on the meaningful vote on the final deal with the EU later today, and that the result will be \u2018tight\u2019. Dominic Grieve, leader of the Conservative rebels, told<\/a> The Daily Telegraph<\/em> that his supporters were not \u2018peeling away\u2019, despite attempts by whips to persuade MPs to back the Government. According<\/a> to The Times<\/em>, Conservative whips have \u2018given up\u2019 on their attempts to persuade rebels and are instead focusing on getting Labour MPs in leave-voting areas to back the Government.<\/p>\n

Police call for new approach to drugs as Javid announces medicinal cannabis review<\/strong><\/span>
\nThe Times<\/em> reports<\/a> that the Police Federation\u2019s board voted unanimously for a rethink on drug enforcement as current laws \u2018have not succeeded\u2019, calling for \u2018an open, honest, transparent debate\u2019. Sajid Javid, the Home Secretary, has announced a review of laws on the medicinal use of cannabis, but ruled out changing the law on recreational use.<\/p>\n

Teachers should confiscate mobiles, Hancock says<\/strong><\/span>
\nWriting<\/a> in The Daily Telegraph<\/em>, Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Secretary Matt Hancock has said that teachers ought to confiscate mobile phones at the start of the school day, as they have a \u2018real impact\u2019 on achievement and expose children to cyber-bullying. Hancock will put forward this argument at a NSPCC conference today.<\/p>\n

Capita awarded highest risk rating and \u00a3500m contract by Ministry of Defence<\/strong><\/span>
\nAccording<\/a> to the Financial Times<\/em>, the Ministry of Defence gave outsourcing firm Capita its highest possible risk rating, shortly before it was awarded a \u00a3500m contract to run military fire and rescue services. Jim Kennedy of the union Unite said that the decision to hand the firm the contract despite the risk assessment was \u2018absolutely scandalous\u2019.<\/p>\n

EU rules out UK participation in European Arrest Warrant<\/strong><\/span>
\nThe BBC reports<\/a> that EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier had said that the UK would not be able to participate in the European Arrest Warrant after Brexit because it was leaving the European Court of Justice and ending free movement. He added that the EU would instead consider a \u2018streamlined\u2019 extradition process.<\/p>\n

Hammond refused to release NHS funding unless chief executive publicly backed plan<\/strong><\/span>
\nThe Guardian<\/em> says<\/a> that it has been told by sources close to the NHS funding deal that Philip Hammond only agreed to it on the condition that Simon Stevens, NHS England\u2019s chief executive, had to publicly welcome the funding. Yesterday, Stevens, who had previously called for a larger increase, said that the new funding represented \u2018a clear gear change\u2019.<\/p>\n

Labour would give Bank of England <\/b>productivity<\/b><\/span>\u00a0target<\/b><\/span>
\nThe Financial Times<\/em> reports<\/a> that Labour has announced that it will set the Bank of England a new target of 3% productivity growth, but refused to specify a time period for this. Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell is to launch the party\u2019s report on the financial system today. It also calls for the Bank of England to relocate to Birmingham and more lending to small firms.<\/p>\n
