MPs vote for third runway at Heathrow<\/span>
\n<\/strong>As\u00a0The Times<\/em>\u00a0reports<\/a>, last night MPs voted in favour of a third runway at Heathrow, with a majority of 296, following the imposition of a three-line whip by the Conservatives, Labour\u2019s decision to allow a free vote and the SNP abstaining. Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, who has opposed the proposals, missed the vote as he was in Afghanistan, drawing criticism from fellow Tories. The paper\u00a0adds<\/a>\u00a0that various councils, Sadiq Khan and Greenpeace are launching a legal challenge to the decision.<\/p>\n

Electoral Commission calls for \u2018urgent\u2019 reform of election law<\/span>
\n<\/strong>The Guardian<\/em>\u00a0reports<\/a>\u00a0that the Electoral Commission has called for urgent reform to the law, as British democracy \u2018may be under threat\u2019. The regulator has called on the Government to change the law in order to tackle misinformation, misuse of personal data and overseas interference. Its recommendations are particularly targeted at digital campaigning.<\/p>\n

Truss attacks calls for \u2018unsustainable\u2019 budget increases<\/span>
\n<\/strong>Writing<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0The Daily Telegraph<\/em>, the Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Liz Truss, attacks calls by fellow ministers for \u2018unsustainable\u2019 increases in their budgets, warning that this would result in the Conservatives being \u2018crushed\u2019 and would be a \u2018complete contradiction of the Brexit vote\u2019. Instead, she calls for \u2018better value for money\u2019. She also criticises colleagues for \u2018talking about banning things\u2019 and promises to review \u2018over-regulated\u2019 jobs.<\/p>\n

BMW warns that UK plants could close if Brexit causes delays<\/span>
\n<\/strong>The\u00a0Financial Times<\/em>\u00a0reports<\/a>\u00a0that BMW has warned that it will have to close its plants in the UK if it cannot import components from the EU quickly and reliably. Customs manager Stephan Freismuth said \u2018if at the end of the day the supply chain will have a stop at the border, then we cannot produce our products in the UK\u2019, but added that the company didn\u2019t \u2018want to give up our UK plants\u2019.<\/p>\n

Commons Defence Committee report recommends spending increase<\/span>
\n<\/strong>The BBC\u00a0says<\/a>\u00a0that a report by the Commons Defence Committee recommends that defence spending should increase from 2% to 3% of GDP, in order to maintain the UK\u2019s influence with the USA and in NATO. It recommends spending the extra funding on increased readiness and anti-submarine warfare, countering Russian threats.<\/p>\n

EU to offer better trade deal if UK relaxes red lines<\/span>
\n<\/strong>The Sun<\/em>\u00a0claims<\/a>\u00a0that the EU is to call for a \u2018realistic and workable\u2019 vision for post-Brexit UK-EU relations and introduce an \u2018evolution clause\u2019 into the conclusions of the leaders\u2019 summit later this week. The clause promises that the EU will \u2018reconsider its offer on trade, in the event that the UK changes its red lines. The paper adds that French President Emmanuel Macron is set to rebuke the UK for the lack of progress in negotiations.<\/p>\n

Hungary warns that no deal would be \u2018very devastating\u2019 for the EU<\/span>
\n<\/strong>The\u00a0Daily Mail<\/em>\u00a0has been\u00a0told<\/a>\u00a0by the Hungarian Foreign Minister, Peter Szijjarto, that if the EU failed to reach a trade deal with the UK, its competitiveness would \u2018further decrease\u2019 and a \u2018very devastating\u2019 situation would result. He also criticised attempts to exclude the UK from participating in joint security projects.<\/p>\n

Government rejects tidal lagoon plans<\/span>
\n<\/strong>The Guardian<\/em>\u00a0reports<\/a>\u00a0that the Government has rejected plans for a \u00a31.3bn tidal lagoon in Swansea Bay because it judged the scheme to be too expensive when compared to other energy sources such as offshore wind and nuclear power. Government analysis suggested that supporting the lagoon would have cost the average consumer \u00a3700 more by 2050.<\/p>\n
