Trump says May\u2019s Brexit plans would \u2018kill\u2019 US trade deal<\/span>
\n<\/strong>In an\u00a0interview<\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0The Sun<\/em>, US President Donald Trump makes the explosive claim that Theresa May\u2019s new Brexit approach would \u2018kill\u2019 a proposed new trade deal between the two countries and criticises her for ignoring his negotiating advice. Trump, who is visiting the UK, also\u00a0criticises<\/a>\u00a0Sadiq Khan for having \u2018done a very bad job on terrorism\u2019,\u00a0claims<\/a> that immigration is causing the UK to lose its culture and\u00a0praises<\/a>\u00a0Boris Johnson.<\/p>\n

Eurosceptics threaten to vote against Trade Bill in protest over Brexit plan<\/span>
\n<\/strong>According<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0The Times<\/em>, Eurosceptic Conservative MPs reacted with anger to the publication of Theresa May\u2019s Brexit white paper yesterday, claiming that the proposed role for the European Court of Justice and movement of people breached red lines. As a result, they have threatened to vote against the Government\u2019s Trade Bill next week.<\/p>\n

Hammond defends treatment of financial services in Brexit white paper<\/span>
\n<\/strong>Chancellor Philip Hammond has\u00a0written<\/a>\u00a0in the\u00a0Financial Times<\/em>, defending the treatment of financial services in the Government\u2019s Brexit white paper. He says that the proposals are a \u2018pragmatic solution\u2019 which would allow the sector \u2018to flourish\u2019. However, Catherine McGuinness, the City of London Corporation\u2019s policy chair, described the white paper as \u2018a real blow\u2019 for financial and professional services.<\/p>\n

O\u2019Mara quits Labour<\/span>
\n<\/strong>The Guardian\u00a0<\/em>reports<\/a>\u00a0that Labour MP Jared O\u2019Mara has quit the party, despite only having the whip reinstated earlier this year following his suspension as a result of the discovery of a series of offensive posts online. He claims to have been made to \u2018feel like a criminal\u2019 and that he had felt unwelcome in the party as a \u2018working-class, underprivileged disabled man\u2019.<\/p>\n

Ofcom head calls for online firms to be regulated<\/span>
\n<\/strong>Writing<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0The Times<\/em>, the head of Ofcom Sharon White calls for independent regulation of large online firms such as Facebook and Google in a bid to tackle fake news and harmful content. The firms would face penalties if they failed to act. The Government is due to set out its position in an internet safety white paper later this year.<\/p>\n

Taxpayers could lose over \u00a35bn over MoD property deal<\/span>
\n<\/strong>The Guardian\u00a0<\/em>carries<\/a>\u00a0details of a report by the Commons Public Accounts Committee, which warns that taxpayers could lose more than \u00a35bn as a result of a 1996 decision to sell off housing owned by the Ministry of Defence. This is an increase from an earlier estimate of \u00a34.2bn because the committee expects rental costs to grow after a renegotiation in 2021, despite the Ministry of Defence predicting that they will fall.<\/p>\n

Labour demands \u2018hostile environment\u2019 review<\/span>
\n<\/strong>The BBC\u00a0reports<\/a>\u00a0that, following the suspension of data-sharing aimed at identifying illegal immigrants, Labour has called on the Government to go further and conduct a detailed review of the \u2018hostile environment\u2019 policy. Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott warned that this was needed to avoid a repeat of the problems affecting the Windrush generation.<\/p>\n

Charity Commission finds \u2018serious failings\u2019 at Presidents Club<\/span>
\n<\/strong>The\u00a0Financial Times\u00a0<\/em>says<\/a>\u00a0that the Charity Commission\u2019s investigation into the Presidents Club following the paper\u2019s expos\u00e9 of its annual dinner has found serious failings on the part of the charity\u2019s three trustees. Jo Swinson, deputy leader of the Lib Dems, welcomed the findings.<\/p>\n
