May to announce plans to increase investment in Africa<\/span>
\n<\/strong>The BBC\u00a0says<\/a>\u00a0that Theresa May will use a visit to South Africa today to reveal plans to increase the UK\u2019s investment in Africa following Brexit. She will set a target of becoming the G7\u2019s largest investor in the continent by 2022, adopting an \u2018ambitious new approach\u2019 to aid by \u2018unleashing the entrepreneurial spirit\u2019 of the private sector. Her three-day trade mission will also see her visit Nigeria and Kenya.<\/p>\n

Macron turns down appeal for Brexit help<\/span>
\n<\/strong>The Times<\/em>\u00a0reports<\/a>\u00a0that French President Emmanuel Macron has turned down an appeal for help to break the deadlock in Brexit negotiations from Theresa May. He used a speech to warn that Brexit ‘cannot come at the expense of the European Union\u2019s integrity\u2019, although France does want \u2018to maintain a strong, special relationship\u2019 with the UK.\u00a0The Guardian<\/em>\u00a0adds<\/a>\u00a0that Theresa May has said that a no-deal Brexit \u2018wouldn\u2019t be the end of the world\u2019 and that the Government \u2018can make a success of it\u2019.<\/p>\n

Treasury opposes plan to double plastic bag charge<\/span>
\n<\/strong>According<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0The Daily Telegraph<\/em>, the Treasury is opposing Theresa May\u2019s plan to increase the tax on plastic bags to 10p, with a senior source telling the paper that it \u2018looks like profiteering\u2019 and that \u2018consumers don\u2019t want to feel like they are being hammered with more taxes on the cost of everyday living\u2019.<\/p>\n

Corbyn distances himself from plan to punish \u2018vexatious\u2019 antisemitism complaints<\/span>
\n<\/strong>The Times\u00a0<\/em>says<\/a>\u00a0that Jeremy Corbyn is distancing himself from claims that Labour would penalise those it thinks have made \u2018vexatious\u2019 antisemitism allegations for \u2018factional\u2019 reasons. The claim was made by The Skwawkbox, a website with close ties to Corbyn\u2019s team, but a party spokesman described it as \u2018inaccurate\u2019.<\/p>\n

Immigration rules doubled in length since 2010<\/span>
\n<\/strong>The Guardian\u00a0<\/em>reports<\/a>\u00a0that over 5,700 changes have been made to immigration rules since 2010, causing them to double in length to almost 375,000 words. Lord Justice Irwin has described this as \u2018something of a disgrace\u2019 and the Law Commission is currently working on a review of the rules.<\/p>\n

Thinktank calls for more use of stop and search<\/span>
\n<\/strong>The\u00a0Daily Mail\u00a0<\/em>carries details<\/a>\u00a0of a new report by Iain Duncan Smith\u2019s Centre for Social Justice, which calls for a dramatic increase in the use of stop and search in order to tackle increasing violence driven by drugs gangs. Duncan Smith claims that this would help \u2018the poorest communities in our country\u2019.<\/p>\n

Taxpayers funded non-disclosure agreement between MP and his aide<\/span>
\n<\/strong>The Daily Telegraph<\/em>\u00a0says<\/a>\u00a0that the taxpayer has funded the cost of a non-disclosure agreement between Khalid Mahmood and his parliamentary assistant and former lover Elaina Cohen, who is Jewish, after she accused him of religious discrimination at an employment tribunal. The cost was covered by insurance funded as part of the expenses system.<\/p>\n

Watson calls for investigation into Russian interference during Brexit vote<\/span>
\n<\/strong>The Guardian\u00a0<\/em>reports<\/a>\u00a0that Shadow Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Secretary Tom Watson has called on the Government to confirm where the National Crime Agency is investigating Russian interference with the leave campaign during the EU membership referendum. He suggested that the vote may have been \u2018stolen\u2019 and called for a full public inquiry.<\/p>\n
