{"id":118886,"date":"2018-11-01T15:07:28","date_gmt":"2018-11-01T14:07:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/?p=118886"},"modified":"2018-11-01T15:11:59","modified_gmt":"2018-11-01T14:11:59","slug":"will-twitter-replace-the-%e2%99%a1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/blog\/will-twitter-replace-the-%e2%99%a1\/","title":{"rendered":"Will Twitter replace the \u2661?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Social media sites continue to hit the headlines for not tackling fake news, especially since research from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2018\/mar\/19\/fake-news-social-media-twitter-mit-journalism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fake stories spread faster than the truth on Twitter<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In response, <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.twitter.com\/official\/en_us\/topics\/company\/2018\/an-update-on-our-elections-integrity-work.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter recently released updates<\/a> to its rules covering fake accounts, distribution of hacked materials, and the way it handles the enforcement of its terms. Twitter will now use more in-depth ways to identify and remove fake accounts. These include spotting inauthentic activity, stolen or stock profile photos and accounts sharing misleading information. Aliases for previous offenders will be found faster, and action will be taken on anyone claiming to have hacked information.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to these changes, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/technology\/2018\/10\/28\/twitter-remove-like-tool-bid-improve-quality-debate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Telegraph<\/a> reported this week that Twitter founder and CEO Jack Dorsey said he was not a fan of the heart-shaped \u2018like\u2019 button and would be removing it \u2018soon\u2019. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TwitterComms\/status\/1056913093471670273\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter clarified<\/a> that there are no immediate plans to get rid of the feature, however, it is rethinking aspects of the current service with hopes of improving the quality of debate.<\/p>\n<p>The Twitter like replaced the star-shape \u2018favourite\u2019 in 2015 and provides a quick way of acknowledging a post or keeping track of content you want to come back to. When multiple people like a post, the Twitter algorithm sees it as more popular and pushes it out further in timelines and notifications.<\/p>\n<p>Usually the aim of those posting fake news or unsuitable material is to get it shared and viewed by as many people as possible. Therefore, techniques like using bots to manipulate likes helps the content reach further.<\/p>\n<p>Twitter users and brands shouldn\u2019t worry too much about the demise of the like. If Twitter was to remove the button there is likely to be a replacement option.
