Raab demands right to exit backstop after three months<\/span>
\n<\/strong>According<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0The Daily Telegraph<\/em>, Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab has demanded the right to withdraw the UK from the Irish backstop after just three months, in a meeting which reportedly \u2018stunned\u2019 Irish officials but was contradicted by Cabinet Office Minister David Lidington when he visited Dublin three days later.\u00a0The Guardian<\/em>\u00a0adds<\/a>\u00a0that EU officials are putting the probability of a Brexit deal being reached at ’50-50′, but that the British want to make \u2018decisive progress\u2019 on the backstop by Friday in the hope of achieving an EU summit to agree the deal on 22 November.\u00a0The Times<\/em>\u00a0says<\/a>\u00a0that, despite press reports that a deal is close, Theresa May spent the weekend phoning Cabinet members in a bid to allay concerns that she is about to trigger a summit without domestic political agreement.<\/p>\n

Military to recruit soldiers who\u2019ve never lived in the UK<\/span>
\n<\/strong>The Daily Telegraph<\/em>\u00a0reports<\/a>\u00a0the Ministry of Defence is to announce today that it will allow foreign nationals who never lived in the UK to serve in the armed forces. Under the plans, a requirement for Commonwealth applicants to have lived in the country for five years will be abandoned. This follows a recruitment crisis, blamed on \u2018the ongoing disaster that is the Capita recruitment contract\u2019 by Commons Defence Committee member Mark Francois.<\/p>\n

Hancock calls on people to take responsibility for their own health<\/span>
\n<\/strong>The Guardian<\/em>\u00a0claims<\/a>\u00a0that Health and Social Care Secretary Matt Hancock has \u2018triggered a row\u2019 by using a speech today to call for people to make healthier lifestyle choices, which he asserts \u2018isn\u2019t about penalising people\u2019. Professor Simon Capewell of Liverpool University warns this is \u2018victim-blaming\u2019 people who\u2019ve \u2018been overwhelmed by a toxic environment\u2019.<\/p>\n

Former Cabinet Secretary Jeremy Heywood dies aged 56<\/span>
\n<\/strong>The BBC\u00a0reports<\/a>\u00a0on the death, aged 56, of former Cabinet Secretary Sir Jeremy Heywood. Heywood, who stepped down just two weeks ago, served four prime ministers in different roles, becoming Cabinet Secretary in 2012.Gordon Brown described him as a \u2018leader of exceptional ability\u2019, while Tony Blair called him \u2018a quite outstanding public servant\u2019.<\/p>\n

Banks denies Russian funding<\/span>
\n<\/strong>Interviewed<\/a>\u00a0on the BBC\u2019s\u00a0Andrew Marr Show<\/em>, Leave.EU founder Arron Banks, who is under investigation by the National Crime Agency, claimed that \u2018there was no Russian money and no interference of any type\u2019. He also told Marr that in hindsight he thought that \u2018we would have been better to remain\u2019 in the EU.<\/p>\n

People would pay more tax to fund social care<\/span>
\n<\/strong>A poll\u00a0conducted<\/a>\u00a0for the\u00a0Daily Mirror<\/em>\u00a0shows that 56% of people would pay more National Insurance to fund \u2018more and better social care\u2019, with 54% willing to pay more income tax. 74% of those surveyed expressed concern about the level of care they expected to receive in their old age.<\/p>\n

Hinds calls for more spending on schools<\/span>
\n<\/strong>The\u00a0Daily Mail\u00a0<\/em>says<\/a>\u00a0that Education Secretary Damian Hinds is calling for billions of pounds worth of spending for schools ahead of next year\u2019s spending review. Interviewed by the paper, Hinds claimed that education was \u2018a different category of spend\u2019 because it \u2018is about investment in our skills base\u2019.<\/p>\n

Johnson tells ministers to reject Brexit plans<\/span>
\n<\/strong>Writing<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0The Sun<\/em>\u00a0ahead of tomorrow\u2019s Cabinet meeting, former Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson calls for ministers to reject Theresa May\u2019s Brexit plans, which he describes as a \u2018stinker\u2019 that will leave the UK as a \u2018vassal state\u2019 for the \u2018first time in a thousand years.\u2019<\/p>\n
