He warned about the risk of an \u2018accidental no deal\u2019 and suggested that the best way of preventing this was to support Theresa May\u2019s deal.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 20px\">MPs in attempt to block no deal Brexit<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><em>The Guardian<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2018\/dec\/20\/theresa-may-cabinet-collectively-focused-on-passing-brexit-deal\">reports<\/a> that a cross-party group of MPs has tabled an amendment to the finance bill in an attempt to ensure that a no deal Brexit can only happen if MPs actively vote to proceed with it. Yvette Cooper, the group\u2019s leader, said that the risks of no deal were \u2018far too high and it would be irresponsible to let it happen\u2019. Other signatories to the amendment include prominent figures such as Nicky Morgan, Hilary Benn, Rachel Reeves, Oliver Letwin, Nick Boles and Harriet Harman.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 20px\">May meets Rees-Mogg for peace talks<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/edition\/news\/brexit-theresa-may-invites-rees-mogg-to-talks-on-healing-rift-mfst8g5sg\">According<\/a> to <em>The Times<\/em>, Theresa May met Jacob Rees-Mogg and nine other Conservative MPs on Tuesday for \u2018peace\u2019 talks, during which she empathised with him over the negative press coverage he received in the aftermath of the failed coup, asking him to imagine what hers had been like for the last two and a half years. According to one attendee, May appealed for the party \u2018to come together and find a way through\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 20px\">Johnson cleared in burka row<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong>In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/politics\/2018\/12\/20\/exclusive-boris-johnson-cleared-wrongdoing-burka-row-qcs-uphold\/\">exclusive<\/a>, <em>The Daily Telegraph<\/em> reports that Boris Johnson has been cleared of wrongdoing following an investigation into remarks he made about women wearing burkas in his newspaper column. A panel of senior lawyers concluded that he had been \u2018respectful and tolerant\u2019 of Muslims, and had been exercising his right to free speech.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 20px\">Almost 600 homeless people died last year<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong>The <em>Financial Times<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/eebed22a-045c-11e9-99df-6183d3002ee1\">carries details<\/a> of experimental estimates by the Office for National Statistics which show that almost 600 homeless people died in England and Wales in 2017. 84% of them male. While mortality was highest in London, it was higher as a proportion of the population in Greater Manchester, Liverpool and the West of England.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 20px\">Ivan Lewis quits Labour over delayed investigation and anti-Semitism<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong>The BBC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-politics-46641102\">reports<\/a> that Ivan Lewis has resigned from the Labour Party. The MP had been suspended for over a year after allegations of sexual harassment, and claimed that the investigation had been subject to \u2018politically motivated delay\u2019. He also accused Jeremy Corbyn of not condemning \u2018those whose hatred of Israel becomes Jew hatred\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 20px\">Convicted MP compares herself to Jesus<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><em>The Guardian<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2018\/dec\/20\/labour-mp-fiona-onasanya-likens-her-conviction-to-that-of-biblical-figures\">says<\/a> the suspended Labour MP Fiona Onasanya, convicted of lying to police to avoid a speeding ticket, has compared herself to Jesus in a message sent to colleagues on WhatsApp, adding that her conviction was \u2018the beginning of the next chapter\u2019 of her story. It is unclear if she plans to remain as an MP if she is sentenced to less than a year.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 20px\">\u2018Chief nanny\u2019 calls for taxes on chocolate and crisps<\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong><em>The Times<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/edition\/news\/chief-nanny-dame-sally-davies-calls-for-new-tax-on-chocolate-and-crisps-z3bgt56ww\">reports<\/a> that Dame Sally Davies, the Chief Medical Officer, has declared herself to be the \u2018chief nanny\u2019, issuing a call for taxes on chocolate and crisps, with the proceeds used to subsidise vegetables.
