In London, almost half of editorial roles have been cut, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pressgazette.co.uk\/buzzfeed-uk-17-redundancies-restructure-halving-journalist-numbers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">down 17<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from an original 37. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MarkDiStef\/status\/1089838060211240961\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> being sliced are primarily across the Buzz team, but also the news and celeb teams. BuzzFeed has also made its head of quizzes <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.niemanlab.org\/2019\/01\/buzzfeed-laid-off-its-director-of-quizzes-because-lots-of-people-are-willing-to-make-quizzes-for-free\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">redundant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because free user-generated content is proving more popular.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2019\/jan\/26\/huffpost-buzzfeed-layoffs-digital-journalism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guardian<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reported: \u2018BuzzFeed founder and chief executive, Jonah Peretti, said the company would reduce headcount by 15 percent, or about 250 jobs, to around 1,100 employees globally.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">This is grim news. This would trim seven percent from its media team across all brands. Verizon began by laying off 20 employees at HuffPost on 23 January, including opinion writers and political reporters. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/layoffs-hit-verizon-media-group\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CNET<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reported that in a memo to staff, Guru Gowrappan, CEO of Verizon Media said: \u2018These were difficult decisions, and we will ensure that our colleagues are treated with respect and fairness, and given the support they need.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next was Gannett, the largest newspaper publisher in the US, cutting around two percent of its workforce. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.poynter.org\/business-work\/2019\/gannett-lays-off-journalists-across-the-country\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poynter reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on cuts that affected editors and senior journalists at local papers owned by Gannett in regions across the US. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2019\/01\/24\/gannett-bloodbath-claims-as-many-as-400-jobs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York Post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reports that cuts affected as many as 400 people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last week, women-focused online magazine, The Pool shared the news of its closure on Friday, after almost four years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Nothing will take away the impact you all made.
