{"id":127384,"date":"2020-01-07T15:27:20","date_gmt":"2020-01-07T14:27:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/?p=127384"},"modified":"2020-01-10T12:31:54","modified_gmt":"2020-01-10T11:31:54","slug":"new-mp-briefing-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/blog\/new-mp-briefing-health\/","title":{"rendered":"New MP briefing: Health"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>As 140 newly elected MPs return to Westminster this week,\u00a0the Vuelio Political team has been getting to know the new intake for our clients and stakeholders.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Aside from Brexit<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0which is clearly going to dominate this session of parliament as the UK formally leaves the EU\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">by 31<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0January and begins trade negotiations<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, it is clear from the 19 December Queen\u2019s Speech that domestic policy will also feature much more in the coming months.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The NHS<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and ensuring it is adequately funded going forward<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0was a major issue of the General Election and this also featured heavily in the Queen\u2019s Speech.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Vuelio has written\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">profiles\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">for the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/New-MPs-with-a-background-in-health.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">17 MPs who have a background in health<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">including two Conservative MPs who served in the House of Commons previously but were defeated by Labour in 2017: Amanda Solloway and Jason McCartney.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The NHS legislation set to be debated in this parliament, which was also listed in\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Queens-Speech-December-2019.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">the Vuelio\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Queen\u2019s Speech Summary<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">includes an\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">NHS Funding Bill<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Medicines and Medical Devices Bill<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and the Health Service Safety Investigations Bill. The Conservative Party election manifesto and subsequent Queen\u2019s Speech also included sections on mental health reforms and social care reform, after the latter issue dominated the previous 2017 general election and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">was a factor that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">deprived the then Prime Minister Theresa May of the party\u2019s majority.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Boris Johnson\u2019s manifesto and Queen\u2019s Speech sought to achieve \u2018<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Cross party consensus on\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">long-term plan for social care reform<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019 and as well as promising an additional \u2018\u00a31 billion for adult and children\u2019s social care in every year of this Parliament\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the only stipulation listed was that \u2018<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Government will ensure that nobody needing care will be forced to sell their home to pay for it<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">With such a high number of new MPs elected,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/New-MPs-with-a-background-in-health.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">the Vuelio Briefing<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0will be useful for\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">public affairs professionals, campaigners and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">politicos<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">wishing to get up to speed on the new House of Commons, especially those with an interest or background in health. This includes the new Conservative MP for Crewe and Nantwich<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Dr Kieran Mullan, who is an NHS A&amp;E doctor and was involved in local campaigns to secure additional funding for Crewe&#8217;s Leighton Hospital. The new Labour MP for Enfield North, Feryal Clark, has a local government background in health, as the Cabinet member for health, social care, leisure and parks on Hackney Council. She was also a Deputy Mayor of Hackney and her brief included responsibility for adult social care, older people strategy, health devolution and integrated commissioning and mental health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The new Lib Dem MP for Twickenham, Munira Wilson, succeeded the party\u2019s former leader Sir Vince Cable, and she now has the largest majority of the party\u2019s 11 MPs. Her previous role was Corporate Affairs Director for a science and technology company, focused on Brexit and health policy issues, and she has also worked within health and children\u2019s charities.
