While Brexit\u00a0and the\u00a0tensions\u00a0in the\u00a0Middle\u00a0East\u00a0are likely to\u00a0dominate the next few weeks in the House of Commons, the focus will\u00a0also be on\u00a0domestic policy for the first time since before the 2016 referendum.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

While the UK\u2019s future relationship with the EU and agreeing a trade deal in the short time frame of the next 12 months will\u00a0<\/span>be challenging, the 80<\/span>–<\/span>seat Conservative majority mean<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>G<\/span>overnment can at last move on to the domestic legislation that Boris Johnson has championed since taking office in July 2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With the largest Conservative majority since Margaret Thatcher achieved in 1987, and with Conservative MPs elected across the north of England and north Wales for the first time,\u00a0it is clear that the\u00a0<\/span>G<\/span>overnment will now ensure that key public services are better resourced.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Education funding is likely to be a factor in this increased public spending<\/span>\u00a0given Boris Johnson has repeatedly promised to \u2018level up school funding\u2019.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Prime Minister\u2019s speech in Downing Street the day after the election victory spoke of \u2018<\/span>providing better schools\u2019 a<\/span>longside a plan to deliver \u2018<\/span>better infrastructure, better education, better technology<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Queen\u2019s Speech<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0which was\u00a0<\/span>summarised by the Vuelio Political Monitoring team<\/span><\/a>, set out the Government\u2019s plans to give schools \u2018<\/span>a multi-<\/span>billion-pound<\/span>\u00a0boost, investing a total of \u00a314 billion more over three\u00a0years<\/span>\u2019. This increase is in addition to<\/span>\u00a0an extra<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a34.5 billion for<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>teacher\u2019s pensions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Increases in spending for this sector mean that by\u00a0<\/span>2022-23<\/span>, the\u00a0<\/span>core school\u2019s budget will be \u00a37.1 billion higher<\/span>\u00a0than it is currently<\/span>. Teachers\u2019\u00a0<\/span>starting salaries will<\/span>\u00a0also be<\/span>\u00a0increased to \u00a330,000 nationally by September 2022.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

T<\/span>he\u00a0<\/span>Government<\/span>\u00a0has also pledged to<\/span>\u00a0renew its focus on further and technical education, providing \u00a3400 million for 16-19-year-old education<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and investing in preparation for the roll out of T levels before the courses start in September 2020. The Queen\u2019s Speech also pledged to invest an additional\u00a0<\/span>\u00a33<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>billion in a \u2018National Skills<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Fund\u2019 over the course of\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>Parliament<\/span>\u00a0and to establish 20 new\u00a0<\/span>Institutes of Technology<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0offering higher technical education in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.<\/span><\/p>\n

As the public affairs community, education campaigners and politicos get to know the intake of 140 new MPs and 15 former MPs returning to the Commons who served before the 2017 General Election,\u00a0<\/span>the Vuelio political team has profiled 19 MPs with a background in education<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Briefing<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>includes\u00a0<\/span>Jonathan Gullis<\/span>, the new Conservative MP for\u00a0<\/span>Stoke-on-Trent North,<\/span>\u00a0who was previously a\u00a0<\/span>secondary school teacher in<\/span>\u00a0Birmingham and a trade union representative for the NASUWT<\/span>,<\/span> and Labour\u2019s new Cynon Valley MP Beth Winter, who was a <\/span>communications<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>officer for the University and College Union<\/span>\u00a0(UCU)<\/span>\u00a0Wales<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It also includes Edward Timpson, the former <\/span>Minister of State for Children and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Families from 2015 to 2017<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0who returns to the House of Commons having lost his former constituency in 2017 to Labour.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Briefing<\/span><\/a>\u00a0also profiles Conservative MP Laura Trott, a former\u00a0<\/span>head of family and education policy at<\/span>\u00a010<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>D<\/span>owning\u00a0<\/span>S<\/span>treet.<\/span>\u00a0She has pledged to campaign for a\u00a0<\/span>new boy\u2019s grammar school<\/span>\u00a0for her Sevenoaks constituency, which was previously represented by the former Defence Secretary, Sir Michael Fallon.<\/span><\/p>\n
