{"id":127421,"date":"2020-01-08T15:39:55","date_gmt":"2020-01-08T14:39:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/?p=127421"},"modified":"2020-01-08T15:46:24","modified_gmt":"2020-01-08T14:46:24","slug":"new-mp-briefing-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/blog\/new-mp-briefing-education\/","title":{"rendered":"New MP Briefing: Education"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>While Brexit\u00a0and the\u00a0tensions\u00a0in the\u00a0Middle\u00a0East\u00a0are likely to\u00a0dominate the next few weeks in the House of Commons, the focus will\u00a0also be on\u00a0domestic policy for the first time since before the 2016 referendum.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">While the UK\u2019s future relationship with the EU and agreeing a trade deal in the short time frame of the next 12 months will\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">be challenging, the 80<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8211;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">seat Conservative majority mean<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">G<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">overnment can at last move on to the domestic legislation that Boris Johnson has championed since taking office in July 2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">With the largest Conservative majority since Margaret Thatcher achieved in 1987, and with Conservative MPs elected across the north of England and north Wales for the first time,\u00a0it is clear that the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">G<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">overnment will now ensure that key public services are better resourced.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Education funding is likely to be a factor in this increased public spending<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0given Boris Johnson has repeatedly promised to \u2018level up school funding\u2019.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Prime Minister\u2019s speech in Downing Street the day after the election victory spoke of \u2018<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">providing better schools\u2019 a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">longside a plan to deliver \u2018<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">better infrastructure, better education, better technology<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Queen\u2019s Speech<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0which was\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Queens-Speech-December-2019.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">summarised by the Vuelio Political Monitoring team<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, set out the Government\u2019s plans to give schools \u2018<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">a multi-<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">billion-pound<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0boost, investing a total of \u00a314 billion more over three\u00a0years<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2019. This increase is in addition to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0an extra<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a34.5 billion for<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">teacher\u2019s pensions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Increases in spending for this sector mean that by\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">2022-23<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">core school\u2019s budget will be \u00a37.1 billion higher<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0than it is currently<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. Teachers\u2019\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">starting salaries will<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0also be<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0increased to \u00a330,000 nationally by September 2022.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">T<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">he\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Government<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0has also pledged to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0renew its focus on further and technical education, providing \u00a3400 million for 16-19-year-old education<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and investing in preparation for the roll out of T levels before the courses start in September 2020. The Queen\u2019s Speech also pledged to invest an additional\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a33<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">billion in a \u2018National Skills<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Fund\u2019 over the course of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Parliament<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and to establish 20 new\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Institutes of Technology<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0offering higher technical education in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">As the public affairs community, education campaigners and politicos get to know the intake of 140 new MPs and 15 former MPs returning to the Commons who served before the 2017 General Election,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/New-MPs-with-a-background-in-education-v-2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Minister of State for Children and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Families from 2015 to 2017<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0who returns to the House of Commons having lost his former constituency in 2017 to Labour.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a
