You can\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/email.vuelio.com\/sign-up-to-covid19-newsletter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sign up to receive your copy here<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Vaccine\u00a0programme\u00a0target\u00a0hit\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Vaccination efforts have continued this week as the Government\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/uk-moves-into-next-phase-of-vaccine-roll-out-as-government-target-hit-early\"><span data-ccp-charstyle=\"Hyperlink\">hit its target<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0to offer everybody in phase 1 of the vaccination programme a jab.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0More than 32 million people have been given their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine with jabs offered to everyone aged 50 and over, health and care workers and the clinically vulnerable. This group accounts for 99% of all COVID-19 deaths during the pandemic, so it is hoped that the most vulnerable are now protected. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Celebrating the \u2018remarkable achievement\u2019 Health and Social Care Secretary Matt Hancock\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hansard.parliament.uk\/Commons\/2021-04-13\/debates\/CA1D1D1E-E5F6-4EB7-A43D-B2D5AF350959\/TopicalQuestions?highlight=%22remarkable%20achievement%22\"><span data-ccp-charstyle=\"Hyperlink\">said<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">: \u2018I\u2019m delighted that across the UK, we\u2019ve met our target to offer a vaccine to everyone in the top nine priority groups, ahead of the deadline of 15 of April.\u2019<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Data from Public Health England\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/977249\/PHE_COVID-19_vaccine_impact_on_mortality_March.pdf\"><span data-ccp-charstyle=\"Hyperlink\">real-world study<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0shows that both the Pfizer and Oxford\/AstraZeneca vaccines are highly effective in reducing COVID-19 among older people aged 70 years and over. It estimates that over 10,400 deaths have been averted\u00a0as a result of\u00a0the COVID-19 vaccination programme up to the end of March 2021.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><strong>Phase 2 of the vaccine rollout\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Phase 2 of the Government\u2019s vaccine rollout commenced this week, with people aged 45 to 49 invited to book their appointments. This comes as the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JVCI)\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/priority-groups-for-phase-2-of-the-coronavirus-covid-19-vaccination-programme-advice-from-the-jcvi\/jcvi-final-statement-on-phase-2-of-the-covid-19-vaccination-programme-13-april-2021\"><span data-ccp-charstyle=\"Hyperlink\">advised<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0that the continued vaccination rollout is based on age. It has also said that unvaccinated individuals who are at increased risk of severe outcomes from COVID-19 on account of their occupation, male sex, obesity or ethnic background are likely to be vaccinated most rapidly by an operationally simple vaccine strategy. The NHS Confederation has called this approach \u2018reassuring\u2019 and called for more operational guidance for primary care teams.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It has also been confirmed that the Moderna vaccine,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/regulatory-approval-of-covid-19-vaccine-moderna\"><span data-ccp-charstyle=\"Hyperlink\">approved<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency in January, will also be deployed in England across more than 20 vaccination sites. NHS medical director Professor Stephen Powis\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/2021\/04\/moderna-jabs-mark-new-milestone-in-nhs-vaccination-programme\/\"><span data-ccp-charstyle=\"Hyperlink\">said<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">: \u2018The Moderna rollout marks another milestone in the vaccination programme. We now have a third jab in our armoury and NHS staff will be using it at more than 20 sites from this week, with more coming online as supplies expand.\u2019<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Chris Hopson, the Chief Executive of NHS Providers, has\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nhsproviders.org\/news-blogs\/blogs\/progress-against-covid-19-but-we-must-remain-cautious\"><span data-ccp-charstyle=\"Hyperlink\">welcomed<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the successes of the vaccination programme but called for caution in the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. He highlighted that the under 50s and the most vulnerable not yet vaccinated must receive their jabs. As society\u00a0opens up\u00a0this week, with non-essential shops, gyms, and beer gardens opened on Monday, he said: \u2018We need to balance celebration with caution. The underlying reality of this horrible virus remains the same &#8211; as we increase social contact, the rates of transmission will go up as well.\u2019<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><strong>NHS England waiting lists\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Statistics from NHS England,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/statistics\/statistical-work-areas\/diagnostics-waiting-times-and-activity\/monthly-diagnostics-waiting-times-and-activity\/monthly-diagnostics-data-2020-21\/\"><span data-ccp-charstyle=\"Hyperlink\">published<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0this morning, highlight the ongoing backlog in NHS services, particularly for routine hospital care with a waiting list now at 4.7 million people. The number of people waiting for a key diagnostic test at the end of February was 1,151,200.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Health Foundation\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.org.uk\/news-and-comment\/news\/significant-investment-needed-as-waiting-list-for-routine-ho\"><span data-ccp-charstyle=\"Hyperlink\">responded<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to the statistics: \u2018The Government and\u202fNHS leaders now need to be clear and realistic with the public about how they intend to get the NHS back to full strength. This includes dealing with the\u202fbacklog of care, achieving the ambitions to modernise the NHS as set out in the long-term plan and anticipating the effects of long COVID and an expected rise in poor mental health.
