In a joint statement, the UK Chief Medical Officers warned that despite the drop in level, Covid-19 is still circulating and \u2018we all need to continue to be vigilant.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">This comes as\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/findings-from-latest-covid-19-react-1-study-published\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">findings<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0from the Imperial College London and Ipsos MORI show infections have halved since the last REACT-1 study in March, with only 1 in 1,000 people infected.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">The main findings from the eleventh round of the REACT study show that between March and May national prevalence has dropped by 50% from 0.20% to 0.10% The data showed that the vaccination rollout continues to impact positively on prevalence. The study found a divergence between the prevalence of infections and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">hospitalisations<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and deaths, suggesting infections may have led to fewer\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">hospitalisations<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and deaths since the start of the vaccination rollout.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Care backlog<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">NHS England has\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/2021\/05\/nhss-160-million-accelerator-sites-to-tackle-waiting-lists\/#:~:text=NHS's%20%C2%A3160%20million%20'Accelerator%20Sites'%20to%20tackle%20waiting%20lists,-13%20May%202021&amp;text=The%20NHS%20has%20today%20announced,wave%20of%20the%20coronavirus%20pandemic.\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">announced<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0a new \u00a3160 million accelerator initiative to tackle waiting lists, by increasing the number of tests and treatments and by developing a blueprint for elective recovery. This comes as waiting list figures\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/statistics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/05\/Mar21-RTT-SPN-publication-version-1.pdfhttps:\/www.england.nhs.uk\/statistics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/05\/Mar21-RTT-SPN-publication-version-1.pdfhttps:\/www.england.nhs.uk\/statistics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/05\/Mar21-RTT-SPN-publication-version-1.pdf\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">published<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0this week show that there are currently 5 million patients are waiting to start elective treatment.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">NHS Providers\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nhsproviders.org\/news-blogs\/news\/new-initiative-is-important-to-create-a-blueprint-for-addressing-care-backlogs\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">has<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0called the new initiative is important, Chief Executive Chris Hopson. He said: \u2018Trust leaders are telling us that, in the places with the biggest challenge, getting through the backlog could, on current trajectories, take between three to five years. We know this is unacceptable and that the NHS needs to develop a bold, radical, plan to go a lot faster, with appropriate extra funding from the government.\u2019<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Nuffield Trust\u2019s Deputy Director of Research Dr Sarah Scobie has\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nuffieldtrust.org.uk\/news-item\/nuffield-trust-wellbeing-of-staff-must-be-at-forefront-of-efforts-to-recover-record-waiting-list\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">said<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">: \u2018It is now very clear that the NHS will need much greater support from the government to aid the service and exhausted staff to work through a frightening level of postponed care\u2026New funding announced by NHS England to support pilot areas to innovate and identify ways to speed up efforts to tackle the backlog of care is welcome. But additional staff and resources will not be easy to find given the NHS will need to\u00a0prioritise\u00a0urgent care, remain responsive to\u00a0hospitalisations\u00a0for Covid and continue to roll out the vaccination\u00a0programme\u00a0across the population.\u2019<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Mental health<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">On Monday the Government\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/schools-and-colleges-to-benefit-from-boost-in-expert-mental-health-support\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">announced<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0\u00a317 million for mental health funding in schools and colleges to help them recover from the challenges of the pandemic. Up to 7,800 schools and colleges in England will be offered funding worth \u00a39.5 million to train a senior mental health lead from their staff in the next academic year, part of the Government\u2019s commitment to offering this training to all state schools and colleges by 2025. Funding also includes a new \u00a37 million Wellbeing for Education Recovery\u00a0programme, which provides free expert training, support and resources for staff dealing with children and young people experiencing additional pressures from the last year \u2013 including trauma, anxiety, or grief.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Announcing the new funding, Minister for Mental Health, Nadine Dorries,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/schools-and-colleges-to-benefit-from-boost-in-expert-mental-health-support\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">said<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">: \u2018It is essential that children and young people can access the support they need and this extra funding further cements our commitment to their wellbeing, equipping them with the tools to look after their mental health\u2019.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Research from the Centre for Mental Health<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.centreformentalhealth.org.uk\/sites\/default\/files\/publication\/download\/CentreforMentalHealth_COVID_MH_Forecasting4_May21.pdf\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0published<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0this week found that 10 million people, including 1.5 million children and young people, in England will need support for their mental health as a direct result of the pandemic over the next three to five years. Based on an analysis of over 200 high-quality studies from around the world, the report identifies key groups of people who face an especially high risk of poor mental health as a result of the pandemic.
