But&#8230; do you actually know what that word means? Do you understand how you and your team might use it for upcoming campaigns? How to talk about it to clients and other brands?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To help prevent you from any out-of-touch floundering in future stakeholder presentations and competitive pitches, here\u2019s how the industry is already making great use of the metaverse and how you can join, too.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">What is the metaverse? <\/span><\/strong><br \/>\nTo cut through all the jargon: it\u2019s a virtual space for interacting. With other people, with places, with items.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The way I try to explain it to friends is, it\u2019s like a hybrid of The Sims, Rollercoaster Tycoon &amp; GTA (without the crime),\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/blog\/pr-interview-rob-baney-senior-sport-brand-communications-executive-for-the-playbook\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said The Playbook\u2019s senior sport and brand communications executive Rob Baney<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Creating your own The Sims-like dream world, building your entertainment offering Rollercoaster Tycoon-style, and then having you and your mates explore this world in the best clothes and with the coolest car, like your character in GTA.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>If you aren\u2019t a gamer, the concept of a metaverse has long been established in science fiction and regularly features in film (Ready Player One and The Matrix, for some dystopian examples), and even portrayed quite poorly in 90s thrillers you may have seen, like The Lawnmower Man and Disclosure. In the latter, for example, it\u2019s shown as already being a part of work tech. Michael Douglas needs to hack a computer \u2013 instead of sitting down to type, he dons a VR headset and gloves for his search and walks through a Virtual Reality Database.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Michael Douglas in virtual reality - Disclosure\" width=\"1500\" height=\"844\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qk3PK3W_wvo?start=218&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>You could say that\u2019s a prediction of how the metaverse may shape up in the next few years \u2013 full integration into our lives, even office documents. You could also say \u2018why did Michael bother when Ctrl + F is right there \u2013 who has the time for that\u2019. But that would be overlooking the allure of realistic interactions with surroundings otherwise closed off, and plenty of us want that.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Why is the metaverse so popular right now?<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\nWhile a metaverse is not a new concept \u2013 not even to the comms industry, who had the opportunity to explore it in \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/pressreleases.responsesource.com\/news\/29552\/i-m-a-marketeer-get-me-in-there-marketing-safaris-in\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Second Life Marketing Safaris<\/a>\u2019 as far back as 2007 \u2013 it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prweek.com\/article\/1738124\/pr-pros-ready-metaverse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">resonating strongly now<\/a>, particularly in the wake of Facebook\u2019s widely-publicised rebrand to Meta and new strategy to build \u2018the\u2019 metaverse, as we search for new ways to connect in our day-to-day.<\/p>\n<p>When people wanted to be with those they couldn\u2019t see in the flesh in the early days of the pandemic, downloads of applications like Zoom, Teams and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2021\/sep\/10\/houseparty-is-over-video-app-that-boomed-in-lockdown-meets-its-end\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Houseparty<\/a> boomed. Games like Animal Crossing: New Horizons broke records, with advertising from Nintendo showing family members and friends using their Switch consoles to fly out for quality time on each other\u2019s virtual islands.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Stay connected with family and friends with Animal Crossing: New Horizons on Nintendo Switch\" width=\"1500\" height=\"844\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2mzAjK0S8G4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Conversations while fishing for bass couldn\u2019t happen in reality during lockdown, but it could online. Connection is the value of digital spaces \u2013 that\u2019s the value a presence in the metaverse can provide to your audience.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">How are brands and businesses already using the metaverse?<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\nUsing Animal Crossing: New Horizons as an example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/blog\/brands-and-politicians-taking-a-trip-to-animal-crossing-new-horizons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">businesses, charities and even US politicians<\/a> quickly realised its potential for engaging with consumers and integrated their branding and messages into the pre-existing world of the game. But many brands and agencies have since gone further into the metaverse \u2013 this isn\u2019t something to get ready for in the future, this is happening now.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Recreating reality:<\/strong> VCCP built virtual offices in gaming and social platform Roblox, using its London Victoria office as a base design, but building in extras impossible in real life, such as an enclosure for meerkats.<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"VCCP in Roblox &#039;School photo&#039;\" width=\"1500\" height=\"844\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XH1X96DC1IA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><strong>Connection in virtual spaces:<\/strong> A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrum.com\/news\/2022\/02\/08\/why-the-brits-2022-celebration-music-the-metaverse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Roblox-based ceremony and gig was held as part of the Brit Awards this year<\/a>, with a virtual version of PinkPantheress booked to perform. Artists including Lil Nas X have also teamed up with the platform for performances.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In-metaverse living:<\/strong> Nike invested in the possibility of virtual footwear with its <a href=\"https:\/\/news.nike.com\/news\/nike-acquires-rtfkt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">December 2021 purchase of digital collectable creators RTFKT<\/a>. \u2018This acquisition is another step that accelerates Nike&#8217;s digital transformation [\u2026] and extend[s] Nike&#8217;s digital footprint and capabilities,\u2019 said Nike president and chief executive John Donahoe.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Comms and campaigns:<\/strong> To publicise the new series of I\u2019m A Celebrity\u2026 late last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itv.com\/imacelebrity\/articles\/im-a-celebrity-has-arrived-in-fortnite-creative\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ITV launched a virtual version of the show\u2019s castle with Fortnite Creative<\/a> for viewers to explore. In fact, ITV has created a number of new ways for viewers to connect with its programming via the metaverse in this way, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itv.com\/imacelebrity\/articles\/im-a-celebrity-has-arrived-in-fortnite-creative\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an in-game Fortnite version of its entertainment show The Void<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">So, should you care? <\/span><\/strong><br \/>\nIn summary \u2013 yes. At its most simple, the metaverse can be a recreation of what we know, but it can also be a fantastic version of what we want, or an overlay of extras to make life easier.<\/p>\n<p>While data from We Are Social\u2019s latest Think Forward report found that 90% of social users were \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prweek.com\/article\/1735003\/nearly-90-social-users-clueless-metaverse-nfts-report-says\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">clueless<\/a>\u2019 about the metaverse, its quick adoption across the industry in real ways is meaningful. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pulsarplatform.com\/blog\/2020\/glimpsing-the-metaverse-gaming-community-and-productivity-in-the-new-normal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Current excitement about these virtual spaces<\/a> may dim, but applications of them will embed into our culture and lives, long-term.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/blog\/will-the-future-be-filled-with-virtual-influencers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Virtual influencers are already here<\/a>, and NLP (Natural Language Processing)\/virtual avatars are an accepted part of online customer service. For those who need other ways to access events and experiences beyond getting on a train to a crowded gathering at a city centre, the metaverse opens up a whole world of possibility and connection. For business, it offers new ways to engage consumers continuously bombarded with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/blog\/how-to-strengthen-connections-to-your-brand-with-neuro-pr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">images and messages<\/a> in ways that will stick.<\/p>\n<p>In a real world that has become increasingly unpredictable, filled with situations we can&#8217;t control, it&#8217;s unsurprising that the possibility to create others we can is appealing. And at the very least, what\u2019s on the way should be a lot cooler than that scene in Disclosure.
