If all the excited industry reporting and write-ups devoted to it is to be believed, a major disruptor and area of opportunity is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/blog\/how-to-communicate-in-the-metaverse-also-what-is-the-metaverse\/\">the metaverse<\/a>, or Web 3.0.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As with the emergence of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Web_2.0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Web 2.0<\/a> before it, the media and the PR sector are busy investing, ignoring or desperately trying to understand Web 3.0 and whether it is actually useful for campaigns and comms. Should you be investing time, resources and brain space to the metaverse?<\/p>\n<p>According to Deloitte\u2019s chief disruptor Ed Greig, backed up by his <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/edgreig\/status\/1541752698114117633\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">robot dog Chip<\/a>, the answer is yes. During the session \u2018The tech disrupting the future of media: Metaverse, VR and more\u2026\u2019 for Media Tel\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/events.mediatel.co.uk\/event\/4dfaa31a-653a-4128-a40a-8668323bda7a\/summary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Future of Media<\/a>, Greig shared why proven capabilities with the metaverse are must-haves for communicators.<\/p>\n<h3>The metaverse is the attention grabber du jour<\/h3>\n<p>After demonstrating Chip the robot dog\u2019s ability to traverse stairs backwards, Greig admitted the robot\u2019s links to the subject of his panel talk with host Omar Oakes were \u2018tenuous\u2019 at best but that \u2018a robot is a useful tool for getting attention\u2019. Capabilities with the metaverse and Web 3.0 is the same \u2013 a way to get attention.<\/p>\n<p>The metaverse is a regularly-covered topic in industry reads like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prweek.com\/article\/1796189\/metaverse-just-playground\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PRWeek<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.campaignlive.co.uk\/article\/five-opportunities-marketers-metaverse\/1748841\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Campaign<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrum.com\/news\/2022\/06\/01\/5-brands-winning-the-metaverse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Drum<\/a> and our own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/pr-pulse-newsletter-signup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PR Pulse<\/a>. It is a subject of great skepticism, suspicion and excitement. Your clients or brand mates will likely have heard something about it, or if they have not, it is a shiny new potential to tempt them with. Particularly if they want to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/resources\/white-papers\/the-pr-guide-to-communicating-with-gen-z\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">engage Gen Z<\/a> or the even younger Gen Alpha.<\/p>\n<h3>Web 3.0 is another way to connect and engage your audience<\/h3>\n<p>\u2018A greater degree of human connection is very powerful\u2019 said Greig &#8211; when all the hyperbole about emerging technologies is stripped away, the metaverse is, in essence, another \u2018opportunity for people to interact with others and be themselves\u2019. Authentic and immersive interaction &#8211; what is more powerful than that for a communicator?<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The metaverse is another space for people to connect with their passions,\u2019 Greig explained.<\/p>\n<p>For those struggling with the visuals they have seen that may not look too impressive, Web 3.0 can be thought of as a more visual version of the chatrooms of Web 2.0 or the WhatsApp groups you have with your friends and family:<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It is the internet, you know &#8211; just more immersive. If anyone says anything more complicated than that, they\u2019re trying to sell you something. Or they\u2019re bullshitting\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The most useful way of preparing yourself for learning about Web 3.0 is to consider what you wish you would have known about Web 2.0 back in 2004. Just avoid making the same mistakes.\u2019<\/p>\n<h3>Other industry greats are already doing it \u2013 but it is not too late to get started<\/h3>\n<p>Brands that have already successfully invested in and entered the metaverse include Nike &#8211; \u2018Their approach was good and they are testing and learning \u2013 not afraid to kill something if it is not working,\u2019 said Greig \u2013 and ITV. No boats have been missed, however &#8211; if you watched the recent Meta announcement of legs and feet in its own Web 3.0 platform, you know there is still far to go with its development&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We are always in a test and learn phase,\u2019 said Greig when talking about the creative industry\u2019s relationship with technology.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018For my clients, Web 3.0 is less a solution, but instead a test, a new channel. Is your organisation adaptable for this new channel? If not, you are going to struggle. This is about honing your organisation to be able to experiment.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Fall in love with the problem and not the solution. Engaging with and understanding the metaverse is about educating yourself and staying agile; being able to pivot when you need to. This is the really important thing about Web 3.0 \u2013 an opportunity to stay agile.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The tools communicators use are always changing, but the human need they address is the same.
