As a result of such consumer limitations, food delivery has been at a <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/future\/bespoke\/follow-the-food\/how-covid-19-is-changing-food-shopping.html\"><strong>record-high<\/strong><\/a><strong> across the country. The sector grew by <\/strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/\">\u00a311.4bn<\/a><\/strong><strong> in 2020 and was quoted as a <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodnavigator.com\/Article\/2020\/03\/19\/Online-food-delivery-one-of-the-only-winners-in-coronavirus-outbreak\">\u2018winner\u2019<\/a><\/strong><strong> of the lockdown period by 162 national hospitality publications. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>While the past few years have been fruitful for brands like Deliveroo and Ocado, a shift in consumer attitudes \u2014 created by the cost-of-living crisis \u2014 has sent sales storming in the other direction at a sudden and alarming rate; while providing much-needed restoration for the indoor dining sector. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Key takeaways<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>National media outlets have identified food deliveries (including takeout, supermarkets and veg boxes) as a major cost-of-living victim sector<\/li>\n<li>Deliveroo\u2019s Buy Now Pay Later [BNPL] partnership with Klarna has been the top cost-of-living delivery sector story since August and received a 68% negative sentiment score, largely driven by Martin Lewis\u2019 highly syndicated criticism<\/li>\n<li>Revenue losses, rider strikes and senior resignations were some of the highest sources of negative coverage affecting all major takeout brands<\/li>\n<li>Deliveroo and Uber Eats briefly diluted negative coverage with philanthropic press releases<\/li>\n<li>Both national news and business publications continue to discusa Just Eat&#8217;s pathway to industry leadership<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Towards the end of lockdown in 2021, more than 25% of consumers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bighospitality.co.uk\/Article\/2021\/04\/22\/Food-delivery-market-reaches-11.4bn-as-a-result-of-the-pandemic\">increased their delivery usage<\/a> and nearly 75% planned to continue after restrictions were lifted. Fast-forward to April of this year and the complete opposite appears to be true \u2014 takeout has been deemed one of three major <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketingweek.com\/grace-kite-advertising-spend-recession\/?cmpid=em~newsletter~breaking_news~n~n&amp;utm_medium=em&amp;utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=breaking_news&amp;eid=28823132&amp;sid=MW0001&amp;adg=8583110\">\u2018victim sectors&#8217;<\/a> and 61% of consumers plan to <a href=\"https:\/\/arkeagency.com\/news\/brand-loyalty-rising-cost-of-living\/\">cut their usage<\/a> by December.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside a significant drop in sales, the brand reputation of some of the UK\u2019s leading delivery services have also taken a hit. As the media reported on rider strikes across the country, regional news sources published specific case studies of workers saying they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whtimes.co.uk\/news\/22956401.i-wont-survive---takeaway-delivery-drivers-go-strike-pay-dispute\/\">\u2018won\u2019t survive\u2019<\/a> and are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edinburghlive.co.uk\/news\/edinburgh-news\/edinburgh-deliveroo-customer-astonished-driver-24938193\">\u2018begging\u2019<\/a> for tips.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UK delivery sector: Share of Voice (1 Aug \u2013 19 Oct)<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/11523510?1112081\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p><em>*Volume and sentiment data measures all regional\/national \u00a0cost-of-living-related <\/em><em>coverage on UK delivery brands 1 August \u2013 19 October.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Approximately 2,686 articles across general news sources, food and business-related publications explored the biggest areas of impact due to \u2018down-trading\u2019 across the UK\u2019s food delivery sector. Of this volume, 42% explored <a href=\"https:\/\/www.retailgazette.co.uk\/blog\/2022\/08\/next-wolfson-deliveroo\/\">major structural changes<\/a> happening within specific brands.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout this period, Deliveroo consistently held the strongest share of voice due to several high-reaching and controversial partnerships shared across print, online and broadcast media. An upsurge in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lutontoday.co.uk\/news\/people\/over-100-food-delivery-drivers-in-luton-took-part-in-strike-after-seeing-pay-nosedive-3857881\">rider strikes<\/a> and its decision to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/wires\/reuters\/article-11098603\/Deliveroo-loses-appetite-compete-Netherlands.html?ns_mchannel=rss&amp;ns_campaign=1490&amp;ito=1490\">leave the Netherlands<\/a> after failing to compete with Just Eat followed closely behind. The strikes were also a prominent source of negative coverage for Just Eat and Uber Eats between 10 August and 9 October, but only Uber was mentioned in the headlines.<\/p>\n<p>Almost all of Just Eat\u2019s coverage was negative due to the aforementioned protests, as well as significant losses \u2013 the most prominent being a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-11077297\/UK-takeaways-Just-Eat-suffers-7-fall-orders-Deliveroo-sales-slow.html?ns_mchannel=rss&amp;ito=1490&amp;ns_campaign=1490\">7% loss in orders<\/a> throughout H1 2022 compared to the previous year. However, discussion around their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketingweek.com\/just-eat-rise-marketing-spend\/\">&#8216;clear path to profitability&#8217;<\/a> was covered in 286 outlets between 1 Mar &#8211; 1 Aug and has picked up again since 19 October. While Uber Eats had almost the same volume of coverage, a tactical press release announcing its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cheshire-live.co.uk\/whats-on\/food-drink-news\/uber-offering-250k-25-restaurants-25200192\">\u2018\u00a3250k offer to 25 restaurants owned by people from minority backgrounds\u2019<\/a> made up 100% of positive coverage, peaking just one week after the brand was called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.windsorobserver.co.uk\/news\/23031771.uber-eats-takeaway-delivery-drivers-strike-slough\/\">\u2018diabolical\u2019<\/a> for worker conditions.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Case study: Deliveroo x Klarna partnership <\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/11532378?1112081\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p><em>*Case study data reflects all regional\/national Deliveroo coverage 1 August \u2013 19 October.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Since August, the most popular story across the country has been Deliveroo&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegrocer.co.uk\/online\/deliveroo-offers-eat-now-pay-later-with-klarna\/672416.article\">decision to partner with Klarna<\/a> to offer \u2018buy now pay later\u2019 services, which was distributed approximately 395 times between 11 and 18 October throughout general news, food, hospitality and business publications.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Top speakers <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While the brand announced the Klarna partnership in a positive light, only 31% of media outlets responded with the same tone. Rather, 68% preferred to comment on the controversy behind the move. David Sykes, chief commercial officer at Klarna, was quoted in 70% of all coverage when he argued this was a way to offer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/news\/uk\/martin-lewis-deliveroo-klarna-buy-now-pay-later-scheme-b1032258.html\">zero-interest<\/a> inflation support to the public, while a spokesperson added that consumers have otherwise been paying with high-interest credit cards <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/news\/uk\/martin-lewis-deliveroo-klarna-buy-now-pay-later-scheme-b1032258.html\">\u2018for decades\u2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While seniors at the BNPL service are calling this a \u2018healthy alternative\u2019, some experts across the country are weighing into the press with a different perspective.<\/p>\n<p>Martin Lewis, financial journalist and founder of MoneySavingExpert.com, became the lead opposition to the decision when he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/news\/uk\/martin-lewis-deliveroo-klarna-buy-now-pay-later-scheme-b1032258.html\">\u2018slammed\u2019<\/a> the company for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/news\/uk\/martin-lewis-deliveroo-klarna-buy-now-pay-later-scheme-b1032258.html\">\u2018pumping up debt\u2019<\/a>. He further argued that debt should be accrued when it is \u2018needed\u2019 and not for a \u2018cheeky Nando\u2019s\u2019. Lewis\u2019s tweet was first picked up by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/news\/uk\/martin-lewis-deliveroo-klarna-buy-now-pay-later-scheme-b1032258.html\">The Telegraph<\/a> on 12 October and syndicated a further 260 times until 14 October, equating to 66% of total Klarna-related coverage (of which 60% mentioned Lewis in the headline) and the main driver of the negative spike.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Dear <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Deliveroo?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Deliveroo<\/a> do you really need pump debt as a way to pay for takeaways?<\/p>\n<p>Buy Now Pay Later may seem innocuous but it is 1) Not yet regulated 2) Debt, even if done right its 0%<\/p>\n<p>Borrowing should only be if NEEDED, for planned one off budgeted purchase, not a cheeky nandos.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Martin Lewis (@MartinSLewis) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MartinSLewis\/status\/1580195133852553217?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 12, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Within some of these articles, Labour MP Yvonne Fovargue backed the belief that it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/lifestyle\/food-drink\/martin-lewis-slams-deliveroo-over-28237219\">\u2018normalises debt\u2019<\/a> while councillor Rosie Parry called Deliveroo a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk\/read-this\/martin-lewis-slams-deliveroo-for-buy-now-pay-later-klarna-option-advising-not-to-borrow-for-cheeky-nandos-3880286\">\u2018gross predator\u2019<\/a> for encouraging families to buy takeaways they cannot afford.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prominence <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As a result of Lewis\u2019s national criticism, approximately 57% of Deliveroo\u2019s headline mentions were negatively associated with incentivising debt. Fortunately, second to this was its collaboration with Boots to deliver cold and flu medicines (18%), via a <a href=\"https:\/\/deliveroo.co.uk\/more\/news-articles\/boots-expansion\">press release<\/a> that provided a much-needed and extensive boost in proactive positive coverage between 25 August and 19 October. While the release was sent out on 22 August, it did not achieve significant national coverage until 18 October when the heat of the Klarna debate began to die down.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Crisis management<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Approximately 82% of Deliveroo\u2019s top headlines were proactive and sourced from a press release. Given that 77% of all coverage features a relevant quote from either seniors or spokespeople at Deliveroo, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/resources\/white-papers\/uk-airline-index-why-press-releases-still-matter-in-pr-crises\/\">the releases acted as a strong crisis management tool<\/a> by allowing key speakers to have some input during a peak in negative coverage.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, while its collaboration with Boots may have been a tactical move to tackle losses, Deliveroo\u2019s release was picked up positively by the media after the BNPL controversy and helped to stabilise brand reputation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is dining on the rise? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Indoor dining forecast coverage \u00a0(1 Mar &#8211; 19 Oct)<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/11542847?1112081\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p><em>*Case study data reflects all regional\/national coverage on UK delivery comms in PR, marketing &amp; business publications 1 March \u2013 19 October.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As the food delivery sector continues to see decline, comms and business outlets across the UK and rest of Europe have been actively reporting on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketingweek.com\/deliveroo-marketing-break-even\/\">crisis strategy<\/a> of specific brands. Since August, there has also been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.proactiveinvestors.co.uk\/companies\/news\/989755\/uber-is-going-large-on-advertising-is-deliveroo-following-suit-989755.html\">extensive analysis<\/a> on the spending forecasts and survival rate of each brand. Approximately 86 articles identified that eating out was likely to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketingweek.com\/grace-kite-advertising-spend-recession\/?cmpid=em~newsletter~breaking_news~n~n&amp;utm_medium=em&amp;utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=breaking_news&amp;eid=28823132&amp;sid=MW0001&amp;adg=8583110\">\u2018experience a boost\u2019<\/a> over the rest of the year.<\/p>\n<p>Given that travel and groceries were also included in this list of beneficiary sectors, it is clear that one of the root causes of this boost is an extended wave of post-lockdown spending. While national news headlines are reporting that non-essential purchases are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bing.com\/search?q=12bn+cuts+cost+of+living&amp;cvid=22f6f85e302e41229af25559d8d8fe8a&amp;aqs=edge..69i57j0l7j69i64j69i11004.12201j0j1&amp;pglt=2083&amp;FORM=ANNAB1&amp;PC=U531\">projected to plummet<\/a> by \u00a312bn, economic experts are stressing that brands should not ignore the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketingweek.com\/cost-of-living-crisis-cut-spend\/\">\u2018Lipstick effect\u2019<\/a> \u2013 a desire for luxury items and experiences in economic downturn. For example, supermarkets have found that while cutbacks and reliance on value brands are at an all-time high, consumers will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/blog\/how-the-top-six-british-supermarkets-are-communicating-inflation\/\">still invest in luxury lines<\/a> like Sainsbury\u2019s Taste the Difference \u2014 particularly on special occasions or annual events.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, regular dining out is suggestive of a higher income household. In the case of an economic crisis &#8211; rather than a pandemic, for example &#8211; some consumers and industries are less affected. Retail Economics CEO Richard Lim told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketingweek.com\/cost-of-living-crisis-cut-spend\/\">Marketing Week<\/a> that sectors \u2018more focused on higher income households will likely perform better than others\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Focus on ad spending<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Both Uber Eats and Deliveroo have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.proactiveinvestors.co.uk\/companies\/news\/989755\/uber-is-going-large-on-advertising-is-deliveroo-following-suit-989755.html\">reported to the press<\/a> that ad spending is an \u2018essential part of the revenue mix\u2019 for \u2018free cash flow generation\u2019, while a Shore Capital equities expert <a href=\"https:\/\/www.proactiveinvestors.co.uk\/companies\/news\/989755\/uber-is-going-large-on-advertising-is-deliveroo-following-suit-989755.html\">added<\/a> that these \u2018skyrocketing marketing costs\u2019 likely come as a response to Just Eat\u2019s \u2018aggressive inroads into the London market\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>While these brands appear confident in their decision, Grace Kite, econometrician, warned in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketingweek.com\/grace-kite-advertising-spend-recession\/?cmpid=em~newsletter~breaking_news~n~n&amp;utm_medium=em&amp;utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=breaking_news&amp;eid=28823132&amp;sid=MW0001&amp;adg=8583110\">response article<\/a> that \u2018not all brands should maintain ad spend in a recession\u2019, advice she predominantly aimed at victim sectors. Rather, she said brands should work out whether investing to secure additional share of market is \u2018worth the cost\u2019 in an economic downturn, as they run the risk of that increase being a \u2018bigger slice of what becomes a much smaller pie\u2019, making it difficult to recover from the previous high after the economy stabilises.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vuelio\u2019s top 3 recommendations <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Vuelio insights team has collated the most prominent guidance points by industry experts in the media over the past six months:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Explore the impact <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/blog\/how-the-top-six-british-supermarkets-are-communicating-inflation\/\">value<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prdaily.com\/marketing-emotion-of-the-year-empathy\/\">empathy<\/a> have been considered the most important brand tones over the past three years, some consumers will not feel the impact of a crisis as much as others, therefore the necessary extent of compassion in communications should be closely measured.<\/p>\n<p>Towards the end of the pandemic, international news outlets <a href=\"wsj.com\/articles\/in-these-uncertain-times-coronavirus-ads-strike-some-repetitive-notes-11587355261\">criticised<\/a> that every advert used the same phrases, sombre voices, empty offices and soft piano music. As a result, some brands quickly became the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vM3J9jDoaTA\">subject of criticism<\/a> across social media. Other publications argued that themes of indulgence, celebration and seizing the day were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.raconteur.net\/how-brands-can-hit-the-right-notes-during-a-recession\/\">strongly preferred<\/a> by viewers and could \u2018speak to the desired attitudes\u2019 in future crises.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Maintain transparency <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.campaignlive.co.uk\/article\/customers-expect-hear-brands-during-cost-living-crisis\/1796314\">a survey<\/a> of more than 2,000 UK adults, 87% said they expected to hear from brands just as much or more during the period of economic instability. Between 22 and 31 August, 43 international marcomms publications repurposed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.raconteur.net\/how-brands-can-hit-the-right-notes-during-a-recession\/\">\u2018heavily cited\u2019 study<\/a> showing that younger consumers value \u2018purpose-driven\u2019 advertising that shows how companies are helping others.<\/p>\n<p>Given that both <a href=\"https:\/\/deliveroo.co.uk\/more\/news-articles\/one-million-meals-with-the-trussell-trust\">Deliveroo<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/whats-on\/food-drink-news\/uber-offering-250k-25-restaurants-25200192\">Uber Eats<\/a> were able to successfully dilute some of their negative inflation coverage with philanthropic press releases, the media has been shown to respond to these gestures in positive and high volumes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nurture Retention<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If your budget lacks the space for a significant value incentive, enhanced loyalty programmes are also attracting national media awareness over the past three months. For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miltonkeynes.co.uk\/read-this\/mcdonalds-launches-mymcdonalds-rewards-loyalty-scheme-in-uk-with-a-free-big-mac-or-nuggets-up-for-grabs-3775109\">the launch of MyMcDonald\u2019s<\/a> was the restaurant\u2019s highest-reaching campaign in regional and national news sources throughout 2022. Similarly, the decision to bring back <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itv.com\/news\/channel\/2022-10-17\/waitrose-brings-back-free-hot-drinks-for-loyal-shoppers\">\u2018free hot drinks for members\u2019<\/a> achieved Waitrose the highest share of voice among all UK supermarkets between the 15 \u2013 18 October.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reading the room<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Just Eat are currently perceived by the press as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.proactiveinvestors.co.uk\/companies\/news\/989755\/uber-is-going-large-on-advertising-is-deliveroo-following-suit-989755.html\">\u2018Dutch Kings\u2019<\/a> that could soon lead the UK\u2019s takeout sector, but its successes are not widely shared in the press beyond the expert insights of business publications. Proactive positive coverage is considerably lower than that of Deliveroo and Uber Eats despite a significant growth rate, demonstrating the importance of active press releases in this sector.<\/p>\n<p>As victim sectors set their budgets for the next fiscal year, \u2018read the room\u2019 appears to be some of the most prominent expert advice pouring into the press.
