This term was featured in 92% of the total 686 UK headlines, which <a href=\"https:\/\/fashionunited.nz\/news\/business\/luxury-as-a-currency-how-the-luxury-resale-market-has-evolved-as-an-investment-vehicle\/2022111724511\">later evolved<\/a> into a phrase used by international publications for the wider movement towards luxury resale.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, both Vinted and Depop\u2019s coverage was between 40% and 50% passing mentions, while 32% of all resale brand coverage mentioned them both within the body of the article. For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/extras\/indybest\/fashion-beauty\/hair\/dyson-airwrap-refurbished-uk-deal-ebay-b2221217.html\">\u2018Refurbished Dyson airwraps on sale at eBay in time for Christmas gifting\u2019<\/a> was published by The Independent on 21 November and has been syndicated 102 times since. Dyson is the certified seller of these refurbished products, meaning this coverage is not as much of a loss to the brand as if it were a third-party seller. However, because of this peak in refurb interest, local and regional outlets have started picking up on \u2018horror\u2019 stories on the most sought-after brands. Almost 200 articles with similar headlines to <a href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/inews-lifestyle\/money\/saving-grace-ebay-wont-refund-faulty-dyson-airwrap-1925906\">\u2018Ebay won\u2019t refund my \u00a3475 faulty\u00a0 Dyson airwrap\u2019<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/whats-on\/shopping\/amazon-prime-day-35-hair-25230169\">\u00a0\u2018Amazon Prime Day \u00a335 hair styler shoppers say is &#8216;much better&#8217; than Dyson Airwrap\u2019<\/a> have ultimately outweighed Dyson\u2019s positive coverage as a certified eBay seller.<\/p>\n<p>The CEO of second-hand tech seller Back Market has been heavily quoted in coverage around electric resale, stating that its ethos is to close the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.managementtoday.co.uk\/back-market-ceo-%E2%80%9Cwe-want-buying-refurbished-products-cool%E2%80%9D\/interviews\/article\/1802174\">\u2018trust gap\u2019<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.managementtoday.co.uk\/back-market-ceo-%E2%80%9Cwe-want-buying-refurbished-products-cool%E2%80%9D\/interviews\/article\/1802174\">\u2018make refurbs cool\u2019.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Third-party partnerships<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As for the fashion brands mentioned within resale coverage, 86% of the discussion is tied to global retailers partnering with third-party resellers as a means to offer second-hand luxury items. While many designers refuse direct distribution of their products, over 448 publications across general news, fashion and beauty have reported on the growing availability.<\/p>\n<p>For example, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Herm\u00e8s, Prada and Gucci were mentioned in 289 headlines between 16 Oct \u2013 30 Oct when Amazon <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/fashion-news\/designer-luxury\/louis-vuitton-chanel-hermes-bags-hit-amazon-secondhand-distributor-1235394863\/\">announced<\/a> it would be listing the brands\u2019 bags as part of its <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/fashion-news\/designer-luxury\/louis-vuitton-chanel-hermes-bags-hit-amazon-secondhand-distributor-1235394863\/\">Luxury Store launch<\/a>, through second-hand distributor What Goes Around Comes Around.<\/p>\n<p>Amazon was not alone in its well-timed partnership, in among this courage Primark was also praised for a similar launch. Between 18 Nov and 23 Nov, 82 news and fashion publications shared 106 articles about the high street store\u2019s \u2018WornWell\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailystar.co.uk\/news\/latest-news\/primark-now-stocking-second-hand-28540476\">collaboration<\/a> with The Vintage Wholesale Company. As a result, brands often spotted there such as Burberry, YSL, Tommy Hilfiger, Nike, Converse, Levi&#8217;s and Dr. Martens have all received a significant upsurge in passing mentions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Competitor strategies<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a bid to compete with the likes of eBay, many high street brands have attempted to regain control by promoting or launching their own resale and refurb lines. For example, local and regional outlets have used the phrase <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/fabulous\/17420080\/where-to-buy-john-lewis-return-pallets\/\">\u2018Bargain Box\u2019<\/a> in 102 headlines since 20 October, referring to return palettes that can be bought from John Lewis, Argos and Very. M&amp;S is leading coverage around fashion rental, a proactive peak in coverage at the beginning of November following a successful <a href=\"https:\/\/corporate.marksandspencer.com\/media\/press-releases\/marks-spencer-puts-value-and-versatility-heart-latest-rental-collection\">press release<\/a> on \u2018putting value and versatility at the heart\u2019 of its rental collection. The cosmetics industry has gained the most awareness within this coverage, primarily due to headlines like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hulldailymail.co.uk\/news\/real-life\/make-up-artist-saves-hundreds-7753940\">\u2018Makeup Artist saves hundreds buying second-hand makeup on eBay\u2019<\/a> which was shared 86 times by local and regional news outlets.
