Following on from ITV\u2019s broadcast of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/blog\/uk-general-election-2024-public-conversation-leading-into-the-itv-debate\/\">Sunak vs Starmer\u2019s debate<\/a> the previous week, which topics grabbed the attention of the viewers and sparked political media reports this time around? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We analysed social and news in the UK General Election 2024 conversation across X, TikTok, Threads, Facebook, blogs, forums, online news, print news, TV, radio, and podcasts, from Friday 7 June 7:30pm, to Monday 10 June.<\/p>\n<p>Did the Conservative\u2019s Penny Mordaunt, Labour\u2019s Angela Rayner, Liberal Democrats\u2019 Daisy Cooper, Scottish National Party\u2019s Stephen Flynn, Green Party\u2019s Carla Denyer, Plaid Cymru\u2019s Rhun ap Iorwerth, and Reform UK\u2019s Nigel Farage\u2019s time on TV shift the needle on the conversation?<\/p>\n<h3>Tax, health and foreign affairs &#8211; Most popular topics before and after Friday&#8217;s debate<\/h3>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/18311030?516077\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-147060 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Top-mentioned-topics@2x-1.png\" alt=\"Top mentioned topics\" width=\"1592\" height=\"1154\" \/><\/div>\n<p>Taking the spotlight for many write-ups in the press and reaction on social media following the debate were the clashes between deputy Labour leader Angela Rayner and Commons leader Penny Mordaunt, who had been placed in close proximity.<\/p>\n<p>Key moments from Friday: The clash over Mordaunt\u2019s choice to repeat Conservative claims that Labour would raise taxes by \u00a32,000; Mordaunt\u2019s repeated apologies for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak\u2019s early departure from the D-Day ceremony; and Reform leader Nigel Farage\u2019s strong criticism of Sunak, branding him \u2018unpatriotic\u2019 and a \u2018complete and utter disgrace\u2019. Farage himself did not escape harsh words, being described as a \u2018clown personality\u2019 by Rayner.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, the BBC debate didn\u2019t make a significant splash when it comes to pushing the directions of press coverage and online conversations. The main difference in trending topics across both when looking at pre- and post- Friday\u2019s debate is for discussion of tax.<\/p>\n<p>Tax saw the highest increase (+7.5%) among the topics we tracked compared to share of voice before Friday\u2019s televised debate.<\/p>\n<p>Mordaunt was criticised by many across social media for returning to the well of that controversial \u00a32k tax claim that Sunak had dug in the first debate:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-147050 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Lisa-Pattern-tweet.jpg\" alt=\"Lisa Pattern tweet\" width=\"400\" height=\"126\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Reports from <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SkyNews\/status\/1799730325859205447\">Sky News<\/a>, BBC, and The Guardian concerning Labour&#8217;s mention of \u2018no tax hikes\u2019\u00a0 were highly shared.<\/p>\n<p>Another conversation that increased following the second debate &#8211; the topic of the NHS.<\/p>\n<p>Analysis shows this was driven by Farage\u2019s statement during the debate that the NHS should be scrapped in its current form. This comment continues to drive discussion in the press and online, as it faces criticism from left-leaning audiences:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-147051 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Jon-Jill-tweet.jpg\" alt=\"Jon Jill tweet\" width=\"400\" height=\"120\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Which of the two TV debates so far has driven the most coverage and conversation?<\/h3>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/18313658?516077\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-147062 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/ITV-v-BBC-volume-comparison@2x.png\" alt=\"ITV vs BBC volume comparison\" width=\"1592\" height=\"1150\" \/><\/div>\n<p>Analysis of the 24-hour periods following each debate shows that it was 6 June\u2019s ITV broadcast that has had the most impact on the conversation and coverage, driving reports and shares.
