Between 27 July and 27 August 2026, GLP-1 drugs generated 57 distinct stories, built from almost 500 perspectives across roughly 2,300 articles.

The following sets out what a month of coverage reveals about where this story is heading next, and what it means for comms teams responsible for shaping a narrative within the spaces this far-reaching issue is traversing.

A Regulatory Breakthrough Undermined by a Fractured Rollout

Earlier this month, the Medicines & Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) became the first regulator in Europe to approve Foundayo, a once-daily dose obesity treatment from Eli Lilly, describing it as progress for patients unable to use injectable medication. Initial reporting of the approval was positive, with The Sun describing the pill as the most effective option yet (with a customary punny title) and The Times using a ‘treatment for life‘ framing.

That anticipatory tone from the press did not last long, however. Within days, coverage shifted from approval to access. Being cleared as safe by the MHRA is very different to being funded by the NHS, a process that runs through NICE’s slower cost-effectiveness evaluation. A GPonline investigation found that only one in four eligible patients had actually been prescribed the existing drug tirzepatide on the NHS, with Local Medical Committees warning that entire GP budgets for diabetes care were being consumed by new prescriptions, leaving no funding for anything else.

Adding another layer to the story was research published in the International Journal of Obesity about ‘treatment-related stigma‘, uncovering a cultural trend of patients experiencing judgement for taking a ‘shortcut’.

The MHRA and figures such as Professor Naveed Sattar present the approval as straightforward medical progress, while GPonline, the National Pharmacy Association’s Henry Gregg, and a number of Local Medical Committees are highlighting the continuing gap between treatment and those who seek it.

Safety Scrutiny is Renewed

Not every story this month concerned pricing or product launches. Coverage of the Josephine Nasr inquest was extensive, appearing in the Daily Mail, The Independent, and The Sun, with this becoming one of the most widely read GLP-1-related stories of the month.

Cardiologists cited the case when calling for improved screening before prescribing, including ECGs, to detect undiagnosed heart conditions. Reporting also featured wider data from the MHRA’s Yellow Card scheme, which has now logged thousands of adverse reactions linked to GLP-1 drugs. While regulators have been clear that this data does not establish causation, the scale of the Yellow Card figures has become a recurring story in its own right, resurfacing in the press whenever a new approval or prescribing decision is announced.

In the same week, Boots temporarily suspended home deliveries of temperature-sensitive GLP-1 injections during the UK heatwave, after internal testing found that standard packaging could not keep the medication below 8°C. Although a minor operational matter on its own, it reinforced a broader impression that the supply chain surrounding these drugs warrants as much scrutiny as the medications themselves.

When Reporting Crosses Over Into Illegal Advertising

A story particularly relevant for the PR and comms sector here actually happened outside of the UK. Dutch health inspectorate IGJ fined several major newspapers, including De Telegraaf and NRC, regarding articles about weight-loss drugs such as Ozempic. Its case rested on the argument that the coverage read more like promotion than journalism, potentially encouraging off-label use, and crossing the line between editorial reporting and advertising for a prescription-only medicine.

The newspapers, backed by publishers Mediahuis and DPG Media, are appealing the fines, describing them as an attack on press freedom. Editors have warned that journalists may begin self-censoring legitimate medical stories to avoid a tone that could be interpreted as promotional.

Treating tone as evidence of intent could set a difficult precedent for health journalism worldwide. For anyone operating in pharma, healthcare, or wellness sectors, this issue warrants close attention as it is tested within newsrooms, alongside pharmaceutical marketing departments.

Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk Compete for Market Dominance

While regulators debated the tone of reporting, Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk continued competing for market position. Foundayo had a staggered launch this month: available privately from early August, formally approved by the MHRA on 10 August, then reaching pharmacies nationwide by 24 August, with The Independent highlighting that the UK was the first country in Europe to receive it.

While the positioning of Foundayo focuses on its conveniences in comparison to Novo Nordisk’s own solution (much of the reporting has focused on this element), Novo Nordisk has experienced a strong quarter. Also positive in tone was the position of pharmacists who welcome the additional choice available to patients, but concerns have been raised regarding counterfeit versions, prompting Eli Lilly to expand its direct delivery service, LillyDirect.

Driving this narrative alongside the two pharmaceutical companies themselves were the pharmacy bodies caught between welcoming greater patient choice and warning that rapid commercial success carries its own risks.

Three Additional Trends Worth Monitoring

Reporting around the rise of GLP-1s has already headed in unpredictable directions, crossing from medical and pharma-focused spaces into regulatory, consumer, and financial sectors. What comes next? The smaller stories emerging now point to where comms teams should focus their monitoring and media strategy going forwards.

The most notable involves an unexpected finding: patient testimony, clinical trials, and a new US Veterans Affairs study suggest that GLP-1 drugs may reduce alcohol cravings, an effect not anticipated when the medications were originally developed for diabetes. The Mirror quoted one patient regarding the reduction of her weekend libations – ‘I can’t finish a pint‘ – pointing to the growing importance of individual case studies for journalists, a trend also emerging in enquiries submitted by the media to the Journalist Enquiry Service. Expert commentary and academic research are still vital, but case studies have become the most frequently requested content type in 2026.

And on the human-interest angle: celebrities continue to headline stories, shaping public perception of these drugs. Reporting frequently features household names like Gemma Collins and Narinda Kaur – all sharing their differing experiences with GLP-1s – and even US-based celebrities that might not usually get press attention here, including Fifth Harmony’s Dinah Jane and comedian Rosie O’Donnell, got traction in the UK’s nationals due to comments on the medication.

Beyond the extra shine celebrity can bring to a story, the bottom line – the numbers – will continue to be particularly important to journalists. NHS spending on diabetes treatment has doubled to a record £2.3 billion, with GLP-1 drugs now accounting for a third of that cost despite representing only 6% of prescriptions. This gap appears likely to widen further as additional treatments reach the market.

What This Means for Communications Professionals

The story of GLP-1s is far-reaching, and increasingly popular with the media. What was the realm of pharma and health journalists has crossed over into consumer lifestyle – high-profile media figures are now routinely asked about the drug if their appearance significantly changes, and media speculation is rife.

The number of media requests related to GLP-1s continues to rise, with a number of Journalist Enquiry Service asks over the last month turning into high-profile news stories.

Comms teams who cross into this space should consider the position of their organisation, and that of their clients, and be ready to respond.

Health advertising regulation is being tested in new contexts. Organisations operating near pharma, healthcare, or wellness should monitor how regulators are beginning to treat enthusiastic coverage as a form of promotion. This distinction is shifting within newsroom editorial practice, not just in advertising.

Access and equity narratives carry lasting weight. Whenever a drug, treatment, or service becomes rationed, expect ‘postcode lottery’ framing to follow from the press. This has become the standard shorthand for unequal access and shows no sign of diminishing.

Personal stories continue to outperform data. The most widely read item in this dataset was not a regulatory announcement, but concerned personal experience. Strategies built primarily around data should be paired with a genuine human story to achieve comparable reach.

Second-order effects deserve attention. GLP-1’s potential impact on alcohol cravings wasn’t being promoted a year ago. The angle attracting the most coverage next month rarely resembles this month’s headlines.

Four weeks of coverage on a single class of drug produced a regulatory breakthrough, a dispute over press freedom, and a commercial rivalry, alongside contributions from celebrities, pharmacists, and researchers each advancing their own interpretation.

The angles that attract the most attention from the press and public are frequently those nobody anticipated pitching a month before. Lumina is designed to surface exactly that range, putting forward the full spread of perspectives behind a trending topic, to provide a guide on what lies ahead.

To explore what Lumina could reveal for your own sector, take a closer look.

Get media requests from the UK media directly to your inbox with the Journalist Enquiry Service – find out more here.

The rise of GLP-1s touches nearly every part of British life, crossing into health policy, personal finance, culture, and even press freedom.
