Not one of the bookies\u2019 favourites, Bergoglio managed just a handful of pope-related mentions during the conclave before the white smoke was seen.<\/p>\n<p>Then, just after 7pm, Bergoglio trended worldwide along with his chosen name \u2018Francis\u2019. Using Cision Social Media we can see how the announcement took Twitter by surprise.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Pope-francis-800x433.png\" rel=\"lightbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Pope-francis-800x433.png\" alt=\"Pope Francis on Twitter measure with Cision Social Media\" title=\"Pope Francis on Twitter\" width=\"640\" height=\"346\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-26723\" \/><\/a>So what was Twitter talking about? With the choice out of the people\u2019s hands, conversation before the announcement was focused on the favourites: <\/span><b style=\"font-size: 15px;\">Angelo<\/b><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\"> <\/span><b style=\"font-size: 15px;\">Scola<\/b><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\">, Italian Cardinal and Archbishop of Milan; <\/span><b style=\"font-size: 15px;\">Peter<\/b><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\"> <\/span><b style=\"font-size: 15px;\">Turkson<\/b><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\">, Ghanaian cardinal and president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace; <\/span><b style=\"font-size: 15px;\">Odilo<\/b><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\"> <\/span><b style=\"font-size: 15px;\">Scherer<\/b><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\">, Brazilian cardinal and Archbishop of S\u00e3o Paulo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Pope-favs-800x431.png\" rel=\"lightbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Pope-favs-800x431.png\" alt=\"Discussion about the pope favourites pre announcement\" title=\"The pope favourites\" width=\"640\" height=\"344\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-26724\" \/><\/a><br \/>As this shows, the discussion about the three reaches a peak between 6-7pm, just before the white smoke. After the Bergoglio announcement, the conversation dies down as sharply as it peaked, and the three favourites are forgotten.<\/p>\n<p>In a world where everything is on the internet and privacy is just a distant memory, 115 Cardinals managed to elect the leader for a group of 1.2bn Catholics without Twitter getting there first.
