The success story of the evening was the<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.channel4.com\/news\/\" title=\"Channel 4 News\" target=\"_blank\">Channel 4 News<\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">team who managed to take home six awards including the prestigious Website of the Year Grand Prix.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The awards recognise outstanding online news and journalism both on a regional and international level. After dinner and a hilarious ventriloquist show (if you have never experienced the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=I4BB1TZcO_o\" title=\"Nina Conti video\" target=\"_blank\">delights of Nina Conti<\/a> then you\u2019re really missing out), the ceremony began.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/CHannel-4-team-e1371120518662-250x188.jpg\" alt=\"Channel 4 news team with their Online Media Awards\" width=\"250\" height=\"188\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-34777\" \/>Channel 4 News\u2019 head of online Anna Doble was clearly delighted with each win, though she claimed the acceptance speeches should have been given by Jon Snow \u2013 absent, she joked, due to him \u2018selfishly going to Iran to report on the elections\u2019. The Channel 4 News team also picked up awards for Outstanding Digital Team of the Year, Best Site for News-Led Journalism, Best Use of Social Media, Technical Innovation and Best Twitter Feed for <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jonsnowC4\" title=\"Jon Snow's Twitter Account\" target=\"_blank\">@jonsnowC4<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Though in Iran, Jon Snow managed to share some thoughts on his award win via a medium befitting the achievement:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p>I&#8217;m honoured and daunted by winning <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search\/%23onlinemediawards\">#onlinemediawards<\/a> twitter award: irony in a week when I am in Iran where Twitter so interupted&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Jon Snow (@jonsnowC4) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jonsnowC4\/status\/344995628989964288\">June 13, 2013<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async=\"\" src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\" type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Another big winner of the night was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.co.uk\/\" title=\"Huffington Post UK\" target=\"_blank\">The Huffington Post UK<\/a>\u2019s Carla Buzasi, who scooped the Online Editor award for a second year running. Carla is having a good week after picking up the Consumer Website 2013 award at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/blog\/aop-digital-press-awards-2013\/\" title=\"AOP Awards overview\" target=\"_blank\">AOP Digital Press Awards last Thursday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As is expected from a room of online media experts, Twitter was used to report throughout the evening. Using a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/products-and-services\/social-media-monitoring\/\" title=\"Cision Social Media\" target=\"_blank\">Cision Social Media<\/a> Conversation Cloud, we can see that people were using the official (rather long) hashtag <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23onlinemediaawards&#038;src=typd\" title=\"Online Media Awards hashtag\" target=\"_blank\">#onlinemediaawards<\/a>, to report the winners of the different \u2018best\u2019, \u2018online\u2019 and \u2018award\u2019 categories, and pass on \u2018congratulations\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Online-Media-Awards-2013-800x283.png\" alt=\"Word Cloud of Online Media Awards\" width=\"640\" height=\"226\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-34778\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The winners were decided by a panel of 18 international judges including chairman Noel Young, owner of ReportBoston.com. While last year\u2019s Chairman\u2019s Award went to the behemoth Mail Online, this year Noel took a different tack and chose local news site <a href=\"http:\/\/thelincolnite.co.uk\/\" title=\"The Lincolnite\" target=\"_blank\">The Lincolnite<\/a>. Collecting the award, associate editor Elizabeth Fish thanked everyone for the three-year-old website\u2019s first award.<\/p>\n<p>True to ever-changing nature of online media, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/blog\/online-media-awards-hashtag-winning\/\" title=\"Online Media Awards 2013 results\" target=\"_blank\">last year\u2019s big winners the Guardian<\/a> only managed one commendation this time around for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/sport\/series\/london-2012-olympics-data\" title=\"the Guardian Data's Olympic site\" target=\"_blank\">Guardian Data\u2019s London Olympic data special site<\/a>.
