Beardgate, as the event has inevitably been dubbed, has caused a storm of comment, opinion and ridiculous comparison pics. That&#8217;s right, Jeremy Paxman has a beard.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The fact Paxman\u2019s beard and the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BBCNewsnight\/status\/367247907948224512\" title=\"Paxman's statement\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018official\u2019 statement<\/a> that followed caused such a stir, has led many to point to the story as an example of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Silly_season\" title=\"Silly Season definition\" target=\"_blank\">Silly Season<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, a very real issue has emerged(!) The statement refers to the irrational fear of beards as \u2018pognophobic\u2019 rather than the correct \u2018pogonophobic\u2019. Jeans!<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Kester Ford (@KesterF) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KesterF\/statuses\/367215103231270912\">August 13, 2013<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async=\"\" src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\" type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The story seemed to keep developing, leading it to trend on Twitter a number of times. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/products-and-services\/social-media-monitoring\/\" title=\"Cision Social Media\" target=\"_blank\">Cision Social Media<\/a> can give further insight:<br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Paxmans-beard-800x483.png\" alt=\"Social media analysis of Paxman's beard\" width=\"640\" height=\"386\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-39163\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><strong>Newspapers<\/strong><\/span><br \/>The topic hit the news sites, and then newspapers, like they didn\u2019t have anything better to report (though we still await a live blog tracking the beard\u2019s movements):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/news\/showbiz\/421761\/The-BBC-is-pognophobic-Jeremy-Paxman-causes-a-Twitter-storm-with-his-Santa-beard\" title=\"The Express\" target=\"_blank\">The Express<\/a> reported Paxman\u2019s statement, repeating the spelling error in its headline. It also used a member of the public\u2019s description that it looks like a \u2018Santa\u2019 beard.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/poll\/2013\/aug\/13\/jeremy-paxman-beard-newsnight-poll\" title=\"Guardian\" target=\"_blank\">The Guardian<\/a> published a poll on its Comment is free section, flying in the face of \u2018This is a Silly Season story\u2019 theories. A string of further articles have appeared with the Guardian\u2019s coverage somewhere between \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/mediamonkeyblog\/2013\/aug\/14\/paxman-beard-editors-lather-newsnight\" title=\"Media Monkey\" target=\"_blank\">publications are reporting this<\/a>\u2019 and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/gallery\/2013\/aug\/13\/jeremy-paxman-newsnight-beards-media#\/?picture=414940396&#038;index=9\" title=\"Photoshopper celebrity beards\" target=\"_blank\">gallery of badly Photoshopped beards on a range of \u2018celebrities\u2019<\/a>. Including Mary Beard.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/entertainment-arts-23678581\" title=\"BBC\" target=\"_blank\">BBC<\/a>, cultivating its own back yard, decided to report that the beard trended on Twitter and highlighted a selection of celebrity tweets on the \u2018issue\u2019.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>And the Telegraph published\u2026 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/politics\/10239720\/Sketch-Jeremy-Paxman-style-icon.html\" title=\"Jeremy Paxman style icon\" target=\"_blank\">well this<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><strong>On the blogs<\/strong><\/span><br \/>Over on the blogosphere, the issue is no less pressing.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.themediablog.co.uk\/the-media-blog\/2013\/08\/paxman-beard.html\" title=\"The Media Blog\" target=\"_blank\">The Media Blog<\/a> took its lead from the Mail Online, repurposing the headline and some choice Mail Online reader comments.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.contactmusic.com\/article\/jeremy-paxman-beard-picture_3812580\" title=\"Contact Music\" target=\"_blank\">Contactmusic.com<\/a> poured a healthy dose of scorn onto the story being so popular.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www7.politicalbetting.com\/index.php\/archives\/2013\/08\/13\/the-paxman-beard-your-verdict-take-part-in-our-silly-season-survey\/\" title=\"Political betting\" target=\"_blank\">PoliticalBetting.com<\/a> launched its own survey accompanied by the news that Ladbrokes have given 4\/5 odds that the beard will last the week and 2\/1 that is will last the rest of the year. \u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And finally, no article about beards and the media would ever be complete without the opinion of Mr Evgeny Lebedev, newspaper proprietor and beard wearer extraordinaire. He has written a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/lifestyle\/london-life\/the-fine-art-of-the-beard-evgeny-lebedev-v-jeremy-paxman-8761055.html\" title=\"Lebedev on Paxman's beard\" target=\"_blank\">column about Paxman\u2019s beard in the Evening Standard<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As Silly Season rolls on, the media looks set to hold on to Paxman\u2019s beard until he shaves.
