With publicly available data, we can compare the volume of shares across different publications.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Prince George\u2019s first official photos have been released today which is, unsurprisingly, big news for the papers. The pictures have appeared across the web with <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%22Prince%20George%22&#038;src=tren\" title=\"Prince George on Twitter\" target=\"_blank\">Prince George<\/a> trending on Twitter in the UK. Taken by Kate Middleton\u2019s father, Michael Middleton, the two images show the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge with the month-old Prince (the actual Prince, not the artist formerly known as).\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-23759337\" title=\"BBC Prince George story\" target=\"_blank\">BBC<\/a> has given the story pride of place on its homepage and its article has subsequently received 1.4 thousand shares and rising. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-2397595\/First-official-royal-baby-portrait-Prince-George-Duke-Duchess-Cambridge-taken-Kates-dad.html\" title=\"Mail Online\" target=\"_blank\">Mail Online<\/a> has similarly given the story pride of place on its homepage and has so far been shared 644 times. Though the Mail Online\u2019s article has had nearly 800 comments, the shares are likely to be a better indication of unique engagement.<\/p>\n<p>The other news (and social media) giant, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2013\/aug\/20\/royal-baby-george-first-official-photos\" title=\"Guardian story about prince George\" target=\"_blank\">the Guardian<\/a>, has only given a small space to the story on its homepage and its article has only received 99 shares. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/news\/royal\/423277\/FIRST-FAMILY-SNAP-Prince-George-with-his-proud-parents-Kate-and-William-and-dog-Lupo\" title=\"Express story about Prince George\" target=\"_blank\">Express<\/a> features the story as its second lead after a more prominently placed article about Princess Diana. Its coverage has received just 15 shares.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/uknews\/prince-george\/10253341\/Prince-George-photo-first-official-pictures-of-little-rascal-released-by-Kensington-Palace.html\" title=\"Telegraph story about Prince George\" target=\"_blank\">Telegraph<\/a>\u2019s article is on 104 shares, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/uk-news\/prince-george-official-pictures-proud-2189319\" title=\"Mirror story about Prince George\" target=\"_blank\">Mirror<\/a>\u2019s has so far had 189 and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/first-official-pictures-released-of-prince-george-of-cambridge-with-parents-william-and-kate-8775487.html\" title=\"Independent story about Prince George\" target=\"_blank\">Independent<\/a> has 68. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Social-Shares-Prince-George-e1376991580434.png\" alt=\"Social shares of Prince George\" width=\"442\" height=\"273\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-39671\" \/>With the suggestion that social networks can account for up to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sparticle.com\/blog\/2013\/06\/website-analytics-report-social-media-marketing-blogging-for-success.htm\" title=\"How much web traffic do social networks account for?\" target=\"_blank\">42% of website traffic<\/a>, getting the social shares ahead of your competition is one of the key survival tactics for digital media. It is by no means the only method to drive traffic to a site and aid ad revenue, but in terms of coverage it is a strong indicator of value.<\/p>\n<p>It is worth noting that the type of story should be targeted at the right publication. The news sites are not popular for the same reasons and the Prince George story was only one example of a generic-interest news item. If the focus switched to the David Miranda story then the Guardian would clearly come out on top, and for celebrity scandal it would be hard to beat the Mail Online.
