The channel will provide Londoners with<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/licensing.ofcom.org.uk\/binaries\/tv\/local-tv\/applicants\/London_ESTV_L_DTPS.pdf\" title=\"London Live\" target=\"_blank\">reliable local news, information and advice<\/a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">and will provide 18 hours of content per day, occasionally<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/licensing.ofcom.org.uk\/binaries\/tv\/local-tv\/applicants\/London_ESTV_L_DTPS.pdf\" title=\"Licensing for London Live\" target=\"_blank\">rising to 24 hours<\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">if there is sufficient audience demand.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/London-Live.jpg\" alt=\"London Live Logo\" width=\"236\" height=\"137\" class=\"wp-image-41708 alignright\" \/>This shift in attention from print to broadcast has already posed some problems with regard to marketing both mediums simultaneously. Chris Blackhurst\u2019s first job as group content director is to integrate the Independent papers, the London Evening Standard and London Live, with the work for each being <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pressgazette.co.uk\/chris-blackhurst-integrate-work-300-journalists-across-independent-evening-standard-and-london-live\">split between 300 journalists<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>This process has already begun with the integration of the News, Sports and Business departments and will continue with the training of journalists in video journalism and creating TV-ready content. Andrew Mullins, CEO of London Live, is confident that the team will be \u2018ready to rise to the challenge\u2019 of making this multi-platform 24\/7 operation run smoothly.<\/p>\n<p>However, to ensure that the smaller workforce is maintained, the publisher has made some redundancies, leaving it at almost <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pressgazette.co.uk\/chris-blackhurst-integrate-work-300-journalists-across-independent-evening-standard-and-london-live\">half the size<\/a> of other national newspapers such as the Guardian. The last group of journalists to go, in the form of the Independent on Sunday\u2019s art critics, has been receiving a great deal of attention from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pressgazette.co.uk\/independent-sunday-arts-critics-be-axed-editor-denies-digest-plan-report\">press<\/a> and on social media. Kate Tancred, managing director of The Smalls, considers this a great opportunity for \u2018independent talent within London\u2019, and believes London Live to be showing an \u2018interesting use of technology (The Smalls online film community) to acquire content\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Kate also believes that London Live is embracing the power of digital technology \u2013 a statement that is no doubt encouraging for Chris Blackhurst \u2013 as well as setting themselves apart as being one of the only channels proposing to give short films prominent airtime as opposed to being used as mere buffers.<\/p>\n<p>The community of filmmakers, who have already worked with the likes of the Guardian, New Look and Universal Music will also have the opportunity to create more films for the channel in the future. As London Live\u2019s proposed percentage of news content for the first year\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/licensing.ofcom.org.uk\/binaries\/tv\/local-tv\/applicants\/London_ESTV_L_DTPS.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">comes to just 28%<\/a>, there is plenty of room in the schedule for the type of content produced by this new talent.<\/p>\n<p>But to what extent will this broadcast venture which is already behind the initially proposed transmission date of <a href=\"http:\/\/licensing.ofcom.org.uk\/binaries\/tv\/local-tv\/applicants\/London_ESTV_L_DTPS.pdf\">September 2013<\/a> be supported financially by the existing enterprises? The Independent itself writes that the channel will \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/media\/tv-radio\/london-gets-first-dedicated-digital-terrestrial-tv-channel-as-estv-launches-london-live-8479721.html\">utilise the editorial resources of both the\u00a0Evening Standard and\u00a0The Independent<\/a>\u2019, and that \u2018the option is available via [its] funding model\/sister\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/newspapers\" title=\"More from guardian.co.uk on Newspapers\">newspapers<\/a>\u00a0to increase expenditure\u2019 if London Live is not as successful as hoped in the early stages. <\/p>\n<p>The channel has also already agreed to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.broadcastnow.co.uk\/london-live-to-offer-urban-tv\/5058183.article\">fully fund commercially viable content at \u00a320,000 per hour<\/a>, and the London Evening Standard is to give the channel a daily listing of its programme schedule within the Standard TV pages, <a href=\"http:\/\/licensing.ofcom.org.uk\/binaries\/tv\/local-tv\/applicants\/London_ESTV_L_DTPS.pdf\">worth \u00a33.1million market value<\/a>. Financially, it seems the channel has a great head start, leaving more time to focus on providing new content, cultivating talent and winning the support of the public.<\/p>\n<p>While the company is facing some issues promoting the new venture, Andrew Mullins believes that the real challenge lies in the transition from well-established print deadlines into a continuous 24\/7 publishing process, as well as hitting immovable deadlines. <\/p>\n<p>Although the company is making a dent in this by way of its digital portfolio of online and apps, Mullins believes London Live will still have the added task of \u2018transforming the content into audio and pictures\u2019. Despite these obstacles, the channel is presenting itself as a supporter of fresh talent and London-inspired content, and could be the new line of revenue that will bring Lebedev\u2019s enterprises safely into the digital age.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ESTV\u2019s new London-focused channel London Live is due for launch early next year.
