{"id":4254,"date":"2010-05-12T15:14:18","date_gmt":"2010-05-12T14:14:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.uk.cision.com\/?p=675"},"modified":"2010-05-12T15:14:18","modified_gmt":"2010-05-12T15:14:18","slug":"do-blogs-matter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/blog\/do-blogs-matter\/","title":{"rendered":"Do blogs matter?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><span style=\"text-indent: 0px;border-collapse: separate;font: medium 'Times New Roman';letter-spacing: normal;color: #000000\"> <\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: #ffffff;margin: 0px;font: 13px\/19px Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif;padding: 0.6em\">\n<div>The observant repeat visitor to this blog (hello!) will have noticed a new embedded video on the right hand side here. &gt;&gt;&gt;<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>These talking heads were filmed during the<span> <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/2010\/04\/who-owns-social-media-in-a-corporate-context\/\" target=\"_self\">Social Media in a Corporate Context conference<\/a><span> <\/span>a couple of weeks back, when our European CEO, Peter Granat (that&#8217;s him in the thumbnail), gave a presentation called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/Communicatemag\/social-media-in-a-corporate-context-2010-peter-granat-cision\" target=\"_self\">&#8220;Why Do Blogs Matter?&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>It&#8217;s not as strange, nor as trivial, a question as it first sounds &#8211; even when you&#8217;re posing it on a blog. All the other social tools available &#8211; and Facebook and Twitter in particular &#8211; can leave\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.micropersuasion.com\/2009\/06\/posterous-is-changing-how-i-think-about-blogging.html\" target=\"_self\">corporate blogs looking a little old fashioned<\/a>, and a little bit too much like hard work.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>But as Peter argued, there are benefits associated with a blog that no other social platform can offer: the branding is all yours, as is the data, while regularly updated, link-friendly content equals good SEO.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>And crucially, a corporate blog allows you to put interested visitors straight onto the sales path. This applies particularly for those with ecommerce, but even steering prospects directly to online sales collateral means a pipeline value can be assigned.<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>There have been a few conversations at Cision this week about success metrics for our blogs in the wake of a<span> <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.us.cision.com\/2010\/04\/revisiting-the-top-100-social-media-internet-marketing-bloggers\/\" target=\"_self\">couple<\/a><span> <\/span>of<span> <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.us.cision.com\/2010\/05\/the-5-new-features-on-twitter-facebook-and-linkedin-pr-pros-need-to-understand\/\" target=\"_self\">posts<\/a><span> <\/span>on the<span> <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.us.cision.com\/\" target=\"_self\">Cision US blog<\/a>, both of which \u201cwent viral&#8221;, harvesting hundreds of tweets.\u00a0So how valuable were these posts? Undoubtedly they brought in significant numbers of visitors, which, as explained above, can (and should) mean traffic entering the online conversion funnel.<\/p>\n<p>Identifying longer term impact of such &#8220;thought leadership&#8221; is altogether more difficult. One US colleague has suggested interrogation at point of sale in order to determine the influence of such activities. But this will undercount the benefits, as it ignores the pipeline value of those prospects that didn&#8217;t make it so far. Yes, the entire pipeline could face the same interrogation, but then you\u00a0hit the Catch 22 of potential disruption\u00a0to the sales process.<\/p>\n<p>There are<span> <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.emarketer.com\/Article.aspx?R=1007652\" target=\"_self\">numerous studies<\/a><span> <\/span>that suggest some communicators are unwilling to fully commit to social media due to uncertainty about what, exactly, to measure. Of course, there are many, many metrics that can used to\u00a0track social activity, which can be combined to create powerful KPIs.<\/p>\n<p>But\u00a0social media metrics\u00a0are<span> <\/span><em>just<span> <\/span><\/em>KPIs.\u00a0A chorus\u00a0of tweets almost certainly shows your social media activities moving in the right direction, but the number of tweets received by a blog post isn&#8217;t in itself ROI.
