{"id":4260,"date":"2010-06-24T14:22:14","date_gmt":"2010-06-24T13:22:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.uk.cision.com\/?p=996"},"modified":"2010-06-24T14:22:14","modified_gmt":"2010-06-24T14:22:14","slug":"nasza-klasa-friends-reunited-facebook-globalisation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/blog\/nasza-klasa-friends-reunited-facebook-globalisation\/","title":{"rendered":"Nasza-Klasa, Friends Reunited and globalisation by Facebook"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In 2006, a group of students from Wroclaw, south-western Poland, took advantage of an apparent lack of native social networks to create in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nk.pl\/\" target=\"_self\">Nasza-Klasa<\/a>.<a title=\"Polish language\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Polish_language\">pl<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.friendsreunited.co.uk\/\" target=\"_self\">Friends Reunited<\/a> &#8211; the name translates as &#8220;Our Class&#8221; &#8211; Nasza-Klasa encourages networking between old schoolfriends. And like FR, the site has enjoyed huge popularity. It is visited by more than\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/technologie.gazeta.pl\/technologie\/1,81010,7248448,Nasza_Klasa_ma_juz_3_lata_i____ponad_13_milionow_Polakow.html\" target=\"_self\">70 per cent of Polish Internet users<\/a> each month and ranked by Alexa among top 3 the most popular websites in Poland (where Google Poland is number one). According to <a href=\"http:\/\/weblogs.hitwise.com\/robin-goad\/2009\/02\/twitter_enters_top_100_websites.html\" target=\"_self\">Hitwise<\/a>, at one point in 2009\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nasza-klasa.pl\/\" target=\"_blank\">nasza-klasa.pl<\/a> was the the 6th most visited website <em>in the UK<\/em>, ahead of Twitter (then in 7th place), reflecting the growth of Britain&#8217;s Polish immigrant population after EU accession in 2004.)<\/p>\n<p>But there is another, less positive, similarity with Friends Reunited.<\/p>\n<p>Poland has historically seemed immune to global internet trends, with activities such as tweeting and blogging generally failing to make an impact. Nasza-Klasa has also benefited from openness and ease of use in a country where broadband penetration remains <a href=\"http:\/\/www.internetworldstats.com\/europa.htm\" target=\"_self\">below European averages<\/a>. But as Internet use increases, so does the threat of Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook\u2019s users are perceived to be younger, better educated, more successful urban dwellers, while Nasza-Klasa has a reputation for appealing to Internet beginners. While one can assume there will always be a psychological need to compare your life with those of old friends (and foes), that same psychology is likely to drive users toward Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>Right now\u00a0Facebook\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thenextweb.com\/pl\/2010\/01\/13\/facebooku-mamy-1-665-240-uytkownikw\/\" target=\"_self\">has an estimated\u00a03 million active users in Poland<\/a> compared with Nasza-Klasa&#8217;s almost\u00a014 million &#8211; but the global network is catching up fast.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In 2006, a group of students from Wroclaw, south-western Poland, took advantage of an apparent lack of native social networks to create in\u00a0Nasza-Klasa.pl.
