Organised by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.societyofeditors.co.uk\/\">Society of Editors<\/a> in association with the Journalists\u2019 Charity and the Newspaper Publishers\u2019 Association, the event is proclaimed as one of the most prestigious in the industry\u2019s calendar. The awards, previously known as the \u2018British Press Awards\u2019 was divided into over 30 categories giving recognition to reporters, feature writers, columnists and cartoonists to name but a few.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s big winner was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/home\/index.html\">The Daily Mail<\/a>, leaving with eight awards including Newspaper of the Year, Website of the\u00a0Year and the Cudlipp Award for outstanding Journalism. Ruth Sherlock of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/finance\/newsbysector\/mediatechnologyandtelecoms\/media\/awards-for-telegraph\/9156736\/Press-Awards-2011-Daily-Telegraph-triumphs.html\">Daily Telegraph<\/a> won\u00a0 Young Journalist of the Year and has received a lot of praise on twitter, including a \u2018congrats\u2019 from fellow nominee Laurie Penny of The Independent who is \u2018still completely thrilled to have been nominated.\u2019<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Other winners included the witty Peter Brookes of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/tto\/news\/\">Times<\/a> who picked up Cartoonist of the Year, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\">Guardian<\/a> which went away with Scoop of the Year for its Milly Dowler phone hacking story and The Times which won Supplement of the Year for The Magazine.<\/p>\n<p>Veteran reporter Marie Colvin of the Sunday Times was also mentioned as tributes were paid following her untimely death in Syria last month.
