{"id":68847,"date":"2014-09-05T13:49:10","date_gmt":"2014-09-05T12:49:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/?p=68847"},"modified":"2014-09-05T13:49:10","modified_gmt":"2014-09-05T13:49:10","slug":"communicate-responsibly-the-role-social-media-plays-in-spreading-and-dispelling-terror-threats","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/blog\/communicate-responsibly-the-role-social-media-plays-in-spreading-and-dispelling-terror-threats\/","title":{"rendered":"Communicate Responsibly: The role social media plays in spreading and dispelling terror threats"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>News of the 82 year old Palmira Silva, who was beheaded in North London on 4 September spread like wildfire on Twitter with scores taking to the microblogging platform to express their horror and speculate on the motive behind the act.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The incident which comes on the back of the terrorist beheading videos of two American journalists, sparked fears of terrorist linked activity reaching London\u2019s homes.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>But while concerns still last \u2013 the MET Police were quick to dismiss terrorist involvement with a press statement issued and tweeted within three hours of the attack.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" lang=\"en\"><p>DCI Sandlin: Too early to speculate on motive behind attack &#8211; based on info currently available, this is not terrorist related <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Edmonton?src=hash\">#Edmonton<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Metropolitan Police (@metpoliceuk) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/metpoliceuk\/status\/507544941317615616\">September 4, 2014<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The MET response was picked up immediately by media and public alike \u2013 making headlines and filling newsfeeds, reassuringly.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>This is the second time this very week that police officials have taken to social media to dispel terror related rumours.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>On Sunday, a terror threat hoax warning Londoners to avoid taking the Tube circulated on mobile messaging platforms and inevitably made its way to social media spreading panic and once again, fear.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The message, read:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Terror-Hoax.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-68853\" alt=\"Terror Hoax\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Terror-Hoax-296x300.png\" width=\"296\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Several senior police officials took to Twitter to control and calm the situation.<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" lang=\"en\"><p>Rumour control: The &#8220;alert&#8221; doing the rounds on social about all Met officers being called in for 4am tomorrow is a hoax.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Sgt Nathan Shickle (@MPSBatterseaSgt) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MPSBatterseaSgt\/status\/506193941956673536\">August 31, 2014<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" lang=\"en\"><p>Social media contains lots of rumours regarding threats to tube network tomorrow.
