{"id":91403,"date":"2016-08-18T10:14:48","date_gmt":"2016-08-18T10:14:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/?p=91403"},"modified":"2016-11-10T17:40:45","modified_gmt":"2016-11-10T17:40:45","slug":"politics-and-current-affairs-buck-trend-as-uk-magazines-suffer-decline-in-circulation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/blog\/politics-and-current-affairs-buck-trend-as-uk-magazines-suffer-decline-in-circulation\/","title":{"rendered":"Politics and current affairs buck trend as UK magazines suffer decline in circulation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>UK consumer magazines saw an average drop in circulation of 5.3% in the first half of the year <u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pressgazette.co.uk\/uk-mag-sales-dropped-5-3-per-cent-in-first-half-of-2016-readers-digest-heat-and-glamour-among-biggest-fallers\/\">according to ABC figures<\/a><\/u>.\u00a0Big name glossy titles, including Now (-21.8%), Heat (-22.3%) and Reader\u2019s Digest (-32.1%) saw some of the biggest declines.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>TV guides saw a universal decline with TV Choice (-3.4%), What\u2019s on TV (-7%), Radio Times (-6.2%) and TV Times (-7.5%), all seeing a fall and perhaps reflecting not only how consumers research their TV viewing but also how the broadcast medium has evolved into more of an on-demand service.<\/p>\n<p>While no particular publishing niche escaped the decline in circulation, a handful of titles appeared to buck the trend.<\/p>\n<p>Cosmopolitan actually boosted its circulation by a massive 59.9% largely\u00a0thanks to the slashing of its cover price down to \u00a31 and the freemium distribution of 100,000 copies.<\/p>\n<p>Unsurprisingly, in an age dominated by political and economic uncertainty, two of the biggest winners in the magazine circulation wars came from the world of politics and current affairs.<\/p>\n<p>Satirical magazine Private Eye (the UK\u2019s best-selling current affairs publication) saw its circulation rise by 0.8% to 230,099 copies every fortnight, the magazine\u2019s highest sales figure since 1986.<\/p>\n<p>Highlighting Private Eye\u2019s continued success, editor Ian Hislop told journalists: \u201cIt&#8217;s amazing&#8230; 30 years ago we had a Conservative female Prime Minister, the Labour Party was in a mess and we had a TV star who ended up as the US President &#8211; how times have changed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The UK edition of The Economist also enjoyed a bumper first half of the year, seeing an increase of 3.7% on its circulation figures.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike Cosmopolitan, The Economist has reduced its reliance on free distribution and now claims it has 95.1% paid-for sales.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Brunt, The Economist&#8217;s CMO told journalists: &#8220;This impressive growth in paid subscriptions demonstrates that demand for quality journalism is on the\u00a0rise in a world overshadowed by low-quality free content.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UK consumer magazines saw an average drop in circulation of 5.3% in the first half of the year according to ABC figures. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":423,"featured_media":95743,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[7272,3729,7271],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/91403"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/423"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=91403"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/91403\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":95742,"href":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/91403\/revisions\/95742"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/95743"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=91403"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=91403"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.vuelio.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=91403"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
